PRAYER TO ST BEDE THE VENERABLE

O God, by the learning of your blessed confessor Bede, you brought glory to your Church; may we, your servants, be guided by his wisdom and assisted by his merits. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE RELIEF OF ILLNESS

Dear Saint Rita, model wife and widow, you yourself suffered a long illness showing patience out of love for God. Teach us to pray as you did. Many invoke you for help, full of confidence in your intercession.

Deign to come now to our aid for the relief and cure of our illness. To God all things are possible; may this healing give glory to the Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, through the prayers of St Rita, may we learn to bear our crosses in life in the same spirit in which she bore hers. Amen.

PRAYER TO ST AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY

O Lord our God, who by your Son Jesus Christ called your Apostles and sent them forth to preach the Gospel to the nations: we bless your holy name for your servant Augustine, first Archbishop of Canterbury, whose labours in propagating your Church among the English people we commemorate; and we pray that all whom you call and send may do your will, and bide your time, and see your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

TODAY’S GOSPEL READING (JOHN 16:20-23)

NO ONE SHALL TAKE YOUR JOY FROM YOU.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I tell you most solemnly,
you will be weeping and wailing
while the world will rejoice;
you will be sorrowful,
but your sorrow will turn to joy.
A woman in childbirth suffers,
because her time has come;
but when she has given birth to the child she forgets the suffering
in her joy that a man has been born into the world.
So it is with you: you are sad now,
but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy,
and that joy no one shall take from you.
When that day comes,
you will not ask me any questions.”

V. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

STAND UP! STAND UP FOR JESUS (HYMN)

Stand up! – stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the Cross;
Lift high his royal banner,
It must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory
His army he shall lead,
Till every foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up! – stand up for Jesus!
The solemn watchword hear,
If while ye sleep he suffers,
Away with shame and fear;
Where’er ye meet with evil,
Within you or without,
Charge for the God of battles,
And put the foe to rout.

Stand up! – stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey,
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this his glorious day.
Ye that are men now serve him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.

Stand up! – stand up for Jesus!
Stand in his strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the Gospel armour,
Each piece put on with prayer;
Where duty calls or danger,
Be never wanting there!

Stand up! – stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor’s song.
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be;
He with the King of Glory
Shall reign eternally.
– G. Duffield, 1818-88

THE TRUE METHOD OF LIFE: PUT ETERNITY INTO EVERYTHING YOU DO

SURSUM CORDA!

LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS!

“Yes, surely, on this day (Ascension) more than ever, let us lift up our hearts! Let them rise to heaven, as if drawn after our Saviour. But let them not ascend merely to enjoy for a few hours the spectacle of His glory. The Church wishes our ascension to be permanent; she wishes that our souls should MAKE FOR THEMSELVES A DWELLING IN HEAVEN, that our earthly life should be a search after celestial treasures.

Let us make this divine consummation the true object of our lives, the vision of our souls, the goal of all our desires and efforts. Let us place our hearts so high that no seduction can reach them. Put eternity into everything that you do; it is the true method of life.”
– Apostolat de la Jeunesse
