LET US, WITH A GLADSOME MIND (HARVEST HYMN)

01 Oct

Let us, with a gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, for he is kind:

Ref.: For his mercies ay endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

Let us blaze his name abroad,
For of gods he is the God:

He with all-commanding might
Filled the new-made world with light:

He the golden-tress’ed sun
Caused all day his course to run:

The horn’ed moon to shine by night,
‘Mid her spangled sisters bright:

He his chosen race did bless
In the wasteful wilderness:

He hath, with a piteous eye,
Looked upon our misery:

All things living he doth feed,
His full hand supplies their need:

Let us, with a gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, for he is kind:
– J. Milton, 1608-74 (based on Psalm 136)
