The kingdom of heaven * is like a merchant in search of good pearls. When he finds a single one of great price, he gives all that he has and buys it. (Mt13:44)
ST GERTRUDE, VIRGIN – FEAST DAY: NOVEMBER 16
Gertrude was born at Eisleben, in Saxony. At the age of five, she consecrated herself and her virginity to Jesus Christ in the monastery of the Order of St Benedict at Rodardsdorf. She had as teacher St Mechtilde and, under her direction, she attained the greatest heights of contemplation. She burned with such love towards the most divine Sacrament of the Eucharist and the Passion of our Lord that she could not think of them without pouring forth abundant tears. She wrote many books to foster devotion. She also was distinguished for the gifts of divine revelations and prophecy. At length, consumed by her ardour of her love for God rather than by any disease, she departed from this world, famous for miracles in her life and after her death.
St Gertrude, pray for us.
