PRAYER TO ST RAPHAEL, ARCHANGEL

PRAYER TO ST RAPHAEL, ARCHANGEL

PRAYER TO ST RAPHAEL, ARCHANGEL

Glorious Archangel, St Raphael, great Prince of the Heavenly Court, illustrious by the gifts of wisdom and grace, guide of travellers by land and sea, consoler of the unfortunate and refuge of sinners, I entreat thee to help me in all my needs and in all the trials of this life, as thou didst once assist young Tobias in his journeying. And since thou art the “physician of God,” I humbly pray thee to heal my soul of its many infirmities, and my body of the ills that afflict it, if this favour is for my greater good. I ask especially for angelic purity, that I may be made fit to be the living temple of the Holy Ghost.

CHRIST, OF THE ANGELS PRAISE AND ADORATION (HYMN)

CHRIST, OF THE ANGELS PRAISE AND ADORATION (HYMN)

Christ, of the Angels praise and adoration.

Father and Saviour thou, of every nation,

Graciously grant us all to gain a station,

Where thou art reigning.

Angel Physician, health on man bestowing,

Raphael send us from the skies all glowing,

All sickness curing, wisest counsel showing

In doubt and danger.

May the fair Mother of the Light be o’er us,

Virgin of peace, with all the Angel chorus,

And may the heavenly army go before us,

Guiding and guarding.

O may the Godhead, endless bliss possessing,

Father, Son, Spirit, grant to us this blessing;

All his creation joins his praise confessing,

Now and forever.

Amen.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY ANGELS

PRAYER TO THE HOLY ANGELS

PRAYER OF ST AUGUSTINE TO THE HOLY ANGELS

O God, be propitious to me and guard me all the days of my life! be merciful unto me, and send to my aid thine Archangel, St Michael, that he may defend me against my enemies.

Holy Archangel, St Michael, protect me against all dangers, that I may not perish on the day of judgment. By the grace thou hast merited, and through Our Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, I beseech thee to deliver me from the perils of death.

St Gabriel, St Raphael, Holy Angels and Archangels, come to my aid. Virtues of heaven, be my help and my strength, that no enemy may be able to injure me either by water or by fire, or while journeying; protect me from a sudden and unprovided death, and grant that, sleeping or waking, I may be freed from all danger. Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (TOBIT 6:11; 7:1, 9-14; 8:4-8)

THE LORD BROUGHT YOU TO ME SO THAT SARAH MIGHT BE ASSIGNED TO YOU AS YOUR WIFE.

Raphael said to the boy, “Brother Tobias.” “Yes?” he answered. The angel went on, “Tonight we shall be staying with Raguel, who is a kinsman of yours. He has a daughter called Sarah.” As they entered Ecbatana, Tobias said, “Brother Azarias, take me at once to our brother Raguel’s.” And he showed him the way to the house of Raguel, whom they found sitting beside his courtyard door. They greeted him first, and he replied, “Welcome and greetings, brothers.” And he took them into his house. Raguel killed a sheep from the flock, and he and his wife Edna gave them a warm-hearted welcome.

They washed and bathed and sat down to table. Then Tobias said to Raphael, “Brother Azarias, will you ask Raguel to give me my sister Sarah?” Raguel overheard the words, and said to the young man, “Eat and drink, and make the most of your evening; no one else has the right to take my daughter Sarah – no one but you, my brother. In any case I, for my own part, am not at liberty to give her to anyone else, since you are her next of kin. However, my boy, I must be frank with you: I have tried to find a husband for her seven times among our kinsmen, and all of them have died the first evening, on going to her room. But for the present, my boy, eat and drink; the Lord will grant you his grace and peace.”

Tobias spoke out, “I will not hear of eating and drinking till you have come to a decision about me.” Raguel answered, “Very well. Since, as prescribed by the Book of Moses, she is given to you, heaven itself decrees she shall be yours. I therefore entrust your sister to you. From now you are her brother and she is your sister. She is given to you from today for ever. The Lord of heaven favour you tonight, my child, and grant you his grace and peace.” Raguel called for his daughter Sarah, took her by the hand and gave her to Tobias with these words. “I entrust her to you; the law and the ruling recorded in the Book of Moses assign her to you as your wife. Take her; take her home to your father’s house with a good conscience. The God of heaven grant you a good journey in peace.”

Then he turned to her mother and asked her to fetch him writing paper. He drew up the marriage contract, how he gave his daughter as bride to Tobias according to the ordinance in the Law of Moses. After this they began to eat and drink. The parents meanwhile had gone out and shut the door behind them. Tobias said to Sarah, “Get up, my sister! You and I must pray and petition our Lord to win his grace and his protection.” She stood up, and they began praying for protection, and this was how he
began:

“You are blessed, O God of our fathers;
blessed, too, is your name
for ever and ever.
Let the heavens bless you
and all things you have made
for evermore.
It was you who created Adam,
you who created Eve his wife
to be his help and support;
and from these two the human race was born.
It was you who said,
‘It is not good that the man should be alone;
let us make him a helpmate like himself.’
And so I do not take my sister
for any lustful motive;
I do it in singleness of heart.
Be kind enough to have pity on her and on me
and bring us to old age together.”
And together they said, “Amen, Amen.”

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

ENTRUST YOUR PAINS AND ILLNESS TO ST RAPHAEL! – “MEDICINE OF GOD”

The book of Tobias suggests that it is God’s Will to cure the maladies of mankind through the Angel whom He wished to call RAPHAEL. St John’s Gospel referring to the pool of Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, tells where the multitude of infirm and sick lay waiting for the moving of the water. “An Angel of the Lord would come down at certain times in the pool and the water was moved. The first to go down into the water after it was moved, was cured of whatever infirmity he had.”

The hymns in the Office of St Raphael recall the healing power of this Archangel and his victory over the demon. We ask him for health of body and soul. We are sick not only when we suffer from physical disease, but also when we suffer from pride, sensuality, spiritual discouragement, indifference to grace and lack of charity, courage and fervour in prayer.
Raphael never considers our cure complete until he has brought us the peace of God which surpasses understanding. If to that end a miracle is required, we may depend upon him to obtain it! ENTRUST YOUR PAINS AND ILLNESSES TO RAPHAEL! He will teach you why you suffer and knowing this will make your pain much more bearable. He leads us to the joy, light and strength of God. Never can you guess when Raphael will work. It is best to leave the manner of action to his wisdom.

A brother helped by a brother is a strong city. Raphael proves himself to be truly a brother to us, at times by his inspiration, at other times by direct intervention but, at all times, you will find him a tower of strength and a kindly light, especially in illness. The important task of bearing your cross will not quite be so difficult if you WALK WITH RAPHAEL!

St Raphael is the special patron of Youth. The Angel took the young Tobias under his special care and protected him from the many dangers that beset his journey in a strange country. He will help our youth in their struggles against the three greatest enemies: the world, the flesh and the devil. The decision of supreme importance in the life of a young man or woman is the choice of a lifetime helpmate. The consequences of this serious choice penetrate into the whole of their earthly life, even into Eternity.

Through Raphael, the young Tobias was led to his future bride, a young lady of rare beauty and high moral qualities. Just as he unites, so he separates individuals when it is a matter of wisdom and when their union would result in harm to their souls. Raphael will manage your affairs magnificently if only you will trust and obey him as Tobias did on his journey. Bring to him your difficulties, seek his help in earnest prayer and trust his guidance during the dangerous time of courtship to a happy marriage. St Raphael is the Angel of travel and the Angel of the Last Anointing. He will be with you to assist your soul as it makes its final journey from time to eternity.

“May Archangel Raphael, physician in care of our health, come down from Heaven and cure all those who are sick and help them to solve the difficult problems of life! Be with us, O Archangel, called the MEDICINE OF GOD; drive away diseases from our body and bring good health to our minds!”

PRAYER TO ST RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL FOR A SPECIAL FAVOUR

Glorious Archangel St Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace.

You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners.

I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels.

Because you are the “medicine of God”, I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body.

I especially ask of you the favour (mention your request) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St Raphael, one of the glorious seven
who stand
Before the throne of Him who lives
and reigns.
Angel of health, the Lord has filled
your hand
with balm from Heaven to soothe
or cure our pains.
Heal or cure the victim of diseases,
and guide our steps when doubtful
of our ways. Amen.
