“THE HOLY GHOST I TAKE TO WITNESS…”

“THE HOLY GHOST I TAKE TO WITNESS…”

PRAYERS SAID IN THE 14th/15th CENTURY

“This creature, of whom is treated before, used, for many years, to begin her prayers in this manner:

First, when she came to church, kneeling before the Sacrament, in the worship of the Blessed Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, one God and Three Persons), of that Glorious Queen of Mercy Our Lady, Saint Mary, and of the twelve Apostles, she said this holy hymn, ‘Veni Creator Spiritus’, with all the verses belonging thereto, that God should illuminate her soul, as He did His Apostles on Pentecost Day, and indue her with the gifts of the Holy Ghost, that she might have grace to understand His will, and perform it in working, and that she might have grace to withstand the temptations of her ghostly enemies, and eschew all manner of sin and wickedness.

THE HOLY GHOST I TAKE TO WITNESS

When she had said ‘Veni Creator Spiritus’, with the verses, she said on in this manner: ‘The Holy Ghost I take to witness, Our Lady, Saint Mary, the Mother of God, all the Holy Court of Heaven, and all my ghostly fathers here on earth, that, though it were possible that I might have knowledge and understanding of the secrets of God by telling of any devil in hell, I would not.

GOD MAY HELP ME IN ALL MY WORKS, THOUGHTS, SPEECH…

‘And as surely, as I would not know, hear, see, feel or understand in my soul in this life, more than is the will of God that I should know, so surely God may help me in all my works, in all my thoughts and in all my speech, eating and drinking, sleeping and waking.

‘As surely as it is not my will nor my intent to worship any false devil for my God, nor any false faith, nor to have any false belief, so surely I defy the devil and all his false counsel, and all that I have ever done, said, or thought after the counsel of the devil thinking it had been the counsel of God and the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.

GOD, WHO HATH KNOWLEDGE OF ALL MEN’S HEARTS…

‘If it hath not been so, God, Who hath insight and knowledge of the secrets of all men’s hearts, have mercy on me therefor, and grant me in this life, a well of tears springing plenteously, with which I may wash away my sins through thy mercy and thy goodness.

‘And, Lord, for thy high mercy, all the tears that may increase my love, and make more my merit in Heaven, and help and profit my fellow Christian souls, alive or dead, visit me with, here on earth.

‘Good Lord, spare no more the eyes in my head than thou didst the blood in thy Body which thou sheddest plenteously for sinful men’s souls, and grant me so much pain and sorrow in this world that I be not delayed from thy bliss, and the beholding of thy glorious Face when I shall pass hence.

… THAT I BE NOT DELAYED FROM THY BLISS…

‘As for my crying and sobbing, and my weeping, Lord God Almighty, as surely as thou knowest what scorn, what shame, what despite, and what reproof I have had therefor, and, as surely as it is not in my power to weep either aloud or in quiet, for any devotion or for any sweetness, but only by the gift of the Holy Ghost, so surely, Lord, excuse me against all this world to know and trow that it is thy work and thy gift for magnifying thy Name and for increasing other men’s love to thee, Jesus.'”

– The Book of Margery Kempe (modernised text 1936)

CHRIST THE KING: HIS KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD

CHRIST THE KING: HIS KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD

For Part II, “Christ the King Possesses Dominion Over All Creatures”, please click here.

…But, nevertheless, a kingdom of this nature, in a certain special manner, is both a spiritual one, and also pertains to spiritual things, as these words, which we have quoted above from the Bible, most distinctly indicate, and moreover as Christ the Lord confirms them by reason of his own actions. Inasmuch as, on more than one occasion, when the Jews, indeed, when even the apostles themselves, erroneously imagined that it was imminent that the Messiah would set the people at liberty and would restore the Kingdom of Israel, he himself both dispelled and destroyed the fond hope.

Disclaiming the title of King from an encompassing multitude of admirers, he refused both the name and the honour by fleeing from them and by lying hid. In the presence of the Roman governor, he declared that his kingdom was “not of this world.”

It is such a kingdom, indeed, as is represented in the Gospels, into which men prepare to enter by doing penance, but they cannot enter except by faith and by baptism, which, although it is an external rite, nevertheless denotes and produces an interior regeneration. It is opposed in a very special manner to the kingdom of Satan and to the powers of darkness. It demands from its followers not only that, with their souls detached from riches and from worldly affairs, they display mildness of character, and hunger and thirst after justice, but that they deny themselves, and take up their cross.

But since Christ as Redeemer has both purchased the Church with his own blood, and as Priest offered his very self as a sacrifice for sin, and so offers himself in perpetuity, is it not evident to all that his kingly office assumes and participates in the nature of both one and the other office? On the other hand, one errs in a most unseemly manner if one takes away from Christ as man all authority over any kind of civil affairs whatever, since he obtains from the Father such a highly absolute jurisdiction over created things, that all things are placed under his power. Therefore, by our Apostolic authority, we appoint the feast of our Lord Jesus Christ the King, annually…to be observed everywhere in the world. Likewise we enjoin, that the dedication of the human race to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus be annually renewed upon that self-some day.

– From the Encyclical Letter of Pope Pius XI, Quas Primas, December 11, 1925, from: An Approved Translation of the Breviarium Romanum, Burns & Oates, London, 1964.

“LORD JESUS, I ACCEPT YOU AS MY LORD, GOD AND SAVIOUR”

The Miracle Prayer

The Miracle Prayer

The Miracle Prayer

“Lord Jesus, I come before You, just as I am. I am sorry for my sins, I repent of my sins, please forgive me. In Your Name, I forgive all others for what they have done against me. I renounce satan, the evil spirits and all their works. I give you my entire self. Lord Jesus, now and forever, I invite You into my life. Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord, God and Saviour. Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul and spirit. Come, Lord Jesus, cover me with Your precious blood and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I love You, Lord Jesus. I praise You, Lord Jesus. I thank You, Lord Jesus. I shall follow You every day of my life. Amen. Mary, my mother, Queen of Peace, all the Angels and Saints, please help me. Amen.

[From “The Secret of Happiness”, The Fifteen Prayers of St Bridget of Sweden (14th century)]

Say this prayer faithfully, no matter how you feel, until you come to the point when you sincerely mean each word with all your heart. Similar prayers like this are found on this blog; for instance the Baptismal Vows, which are prayed by all Catholic believers, and renewed by all faithful at least once a year, at Easter (the time after our Lord’s redemptive suffering, after his rising from the dead, which made it possible for us to be called and chosen (John 15:16) and to be born again of water and the Spirit (John 3:5) through faith; our faith and that of our household, which is a gift of God, a grace, and not something that we have achieved of ourselves, therefore we cannot boast of it (Ephesians 2:8,9) ), but humbly acknowledge that we cannot ever thank the Lord for his gift enough. Thanks be to God. Praise the Lord.

“I RENEW MY BAPTISMAL VOWS”

“I RENEW MY BAPTISMAL VOWS”
I renew my Baptismal Vows. I renounce satan with all his works and pomps. I take Jesus Christ to be my model and my guide and I promise to be faithful to Him until the end of my life. Amen.
I beg of You, my Lord God, to keep satan and all other evil spirits who wander throughout the world chained in hell and spare us from all their temptations.
My Lord God, even now I accept at thy hands cheerfully and willingly with all its anxieties, pains and sufferings whatever kind of life and death it may please thee to be mine.
Amen.
