DEDICATION OF THE BASILICAS OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES: BIBLE READING (ACTS 28:11-16, 30-31)

DEDICATION OF THE BASILICAS OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES: BIBLE READING (ACTS 28:11-16, 30-31)

DEDICATION OF THE CHURCHES OF STS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES – NOVEMBER 18

So we came to Rome.

At the end of three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island; she came from Alexandria and her figurehead was the Twins. We put in at Syracuse and spent three days there; from there we followed the coast up to Rhegium. After one day there a south wind sprang up and on the second day we made Puteoli, where we found some brothers and were much rewarded by staying a week with them. And so we came to Rome.

When the brothers there heard of our arrival they came to meet us, as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns. When Paul saw them he thanked God and took courage. On our arrival in Rome Paul was allowed to stay in lodgings of his own with the soldier who guarded him.

Paul spent the whole of the two years in his own rented lodging. He welcomed all who came to visit him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ with complete freedom and without hindrance from anyone.

O PETER, SHEPHERD GOOD (HYMN)

O Peter, Shepherd good, our voices sing of thee;

Thy very word had might from chains of sin to free;

To thee; by power divine, the mystic keys were given,

Which ope the skies to men, or close the gates of heaven.

All honour, might, and power, and hymns of joy we bring,

While to the Trinity eternal praise we sing:

He rules the universe in wondrous unity,

And shall, throughout the day of all eternity. Amen.

FLESH AND BLOOD HATH NOT REVEALED IT TO THEE, BUT MY FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN (Mt. 16:17b)

Chair of St Peter; homily by St Leo, Pope

The Lord asked the apostles, what men thought of him; and as long as they were expressing the obscure opinions of men, there was one common reply from all. But when he asked what they themselves thought, he who was first in apostolic dignity was the first to confess the Lord. And when he had said: “You are the Christ the Son of the living God,” Jesus answered him: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.” That is: “You are, therefore, blessed, because my Father has taught you; earthly opinion has not deceived you, but heavenly inspiration has instructed you; and not flesh and blood, but he, whose only-begotten Son I am, has revealed me to you.”

And I say to you,” he says: that is, “As my Father has manifested to you my divinity, so I make known to you your excellence.

You are Peter“, that is, “As I am the invulnerable rock, the cornerstone, who make both one, I the foundation beside which there can be laid no other, so you too are a rock, in my strength made hard, and I share with you the powers which are proper to me.”

And upon this rock it”will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it“: “Upon this strength,” he says, “I will construct an eternal temple; and my Church which is to rise to the height of heaven, shall be founded upon the firmness of this faith.”

Against this confession the gates of hell shall never prevail, and the chains of death shall not take hold upon it, for these words are the words of life. Those who confess him, he raises to heaven; those who deny him, he buries in hell. And so he says to the most blessed Peter: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever you shall bind on earth, it shall be bheaven.n heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” This power indeed, has also passed to the other apostles, and the essence of this decree has come down to all the rulers of the Church; but it is not in vain that what is meant for all should be committed to one only. For it is entrusted especially to Peter, because Peter is set before all the rulers of the Church as an example.

Therefore, Peter’s privilege remains, wheresoever judgment is given according to his justice. Nor is there too great a degree of severity or indulgence, when nothing will be bound or loosed, except what Peter will bind or loose.

THE SOLEMN FEAST OF THE CHAIR OF ST PETER

Homily by St Augustine, Bishop

The solemn feast of today was called St Peter’s Chair by our forefathers, because it is said that on this day Peter, first of the Apostles, took possession of his episcopal chair. Rightly, therefore, do the churches honour the feast of that Chair, which the Apostle accepted for the salvation of the churches, as the Lord said: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.”

Therefore, the Lord named Peter the foundation of the Church; and it is, therefore, right that the Church should honour this foundation, upon which the lofty structure of the ecclesiastical edifice is built. The Psalm which has been read, says very suitably: “Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people, and praise him in the chair of the ancients.” Blessed be God who has commanded the blessed Apostle Peter to be exalted in the Church; for it is just that we should honour in the Church this foundation, by which it rises to heaven.

In keeping today the feast of this Chair, we honour the office and the priesthood. Individual churches pay to one another this tribute of mutual respect, for the more the priestly office is honoured, the more the dignity of the Church is enhanced. Since religious observance has introduced this feast into the life of the Church, I wonder why some infidels of today are sunk so deep in error, that they place food and wine upon the tombs of the dead, as though souls which have departed from the body were in need of bodily refreshment.

THE CHAIR OF ST PETER, GOSPEL READING (MATTHEW 16:13-19)

YOU ARE PETER AND ON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But you,” he said, “who do you say I am?” Then Simon Peter spoke up, “You are the Christ,” he said, “the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.”

THE CHAIR OF ST PETER, RESPONSORIAL PSALM (PSALM 22)

R. The Lord is my shepherd:
there is nothing I shall want.

1. The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit. (R.)

2. He guides me along the right path;
he is true to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff;
with these you give me comfort. (R.)

3. You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing. (R.)

4. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever. (R.)

ALLELUIA

Alleluia, alleluia!
You are Peter, and on this rock
I will build my church.
And the gates of the underworld
can never hold out against it.
Alleluia!

THE CHAIR OF ST PETER, BIBLE READING (1 PETER 5:1-4)

I AM AN ELDER MYSELF AND A WITNESS TO THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST.

I have something to tell your elders: I am an elder myself, and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and with you I have a share in the glory that is to be revealed. Be the shepherds of the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it, not simply as a duty but gladly, because God wants it; not for sordid money, but because you are eager to do it. Never be a dictator over any group that is put in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When your chief shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory.

R. Thanks be to God.
