TODAY’S BIBLE READING (JEREMIAH 31:31-34)

I WILL MAKE A NEW COVENANT AND WILL NEVER CALL THEIR SIN TO MIND.

Behold the days shall come, saith the Lord, and I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Juda:

Not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt: the covenant which they made void, and I had dominion over them, saith the Lord.

But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my law in their bowels, and I will write it in their heart: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying: Know the Lord: for all shall know me from the least of them even to the greatest, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (2 KINGS 22:8-13, 23:1-3)

IN THE PEOPLE’S HEARING THE KING READ OUT EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID IN THE BOOK OF THE COVENANT FOUND IN THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD, AND IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD HE MADE A COVENANT.

The high priest Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the Temple of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, who read it. Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him as follows, “Your servants” he said “have melted down the silver which was in the Temple and have handed it over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of the Lord.” Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book”; and Shaphan read it aloud in the king’s presence.

On hearing the contents of the Book of the Law, the king tore his garments, and gave the following order to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary and Assiah the king’s minister: “Go and consult the Lord, on behalf of me and the people, about the contents of this book that has been found. Great indeed must be the anger of the Lord blazing out against us because our ancestors did not obey what this book says by practising everything written in it.”

The king then had all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem summoned to him, and the king went up to the Temple of the Lord with all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, priests, prophets and all the people, of high or low degree. In their hearing he read out everything that was said in the book of the covenant found in the Temple of the Lord. The king stood beside the pillar, and in the presence of the Lord he made a covenant to follow the Lord and keep his commandments and decrees and laws with all his heart and soul, in order to enforce the terms of the covenant as written in that book. All the people gave their allegiance to the covenant.

MAUNDY THURSDAY, BIBLE READING I (EXODUS 12:1-8, 11-14)

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: “This month is to be the first of all the others for you. Speak to the whole community of Israel and say, ‘On the tenth day of this month each man must take an animal from the flock, one for each family: one animal for each household. If the household is too small to eat the animal, a man must join with his neighbour, the nearest to his house, as the number of persons required. You must take into account what each can eat in deciding the number for the animal. It must be an animal without blemish, a male one year old; you may take it from either sheep or goats. You must keep it till the fourteenth day of the month when the whole assembly of the community of Israel shall slaughter it between the two evenings. Some of the blood must then be taken and put on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where it is eaten.

That night, the flesh is to be eaten, roasted over the fire; it must be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. You shall eat it hastily: it is a passover in honour of the Lord. That night, I will go through the land of Egypt and strike down all the first-born in the land of Egypt, man and beast alike, and I shall deal out punishment to all the gods of Egypt, I am the Lord!

The blood shall serve to mark the houses that you live in. When I see the blood I will pass over you and you shall escape the destroying plague when I strike the land of Egypt. This is to be a day of remembrance for you, and you must celebrate it as a feast in the Lord’s honour. For all generations you are to declare it a day of festival, for ever.'”

10th APRIL, BIBLE READING (GENESIS 17:3-9)

YOU SHALL BECOME THE FATHER OF A MULTITUDE OF NATIONS.

Abram bowed to the ground and God said this to him, “Here now is my covenant with you: you shall become the father of a multitude of nations. You shall no longer be called Abram; your name shall be Abraham, for I will make you father of a multitude of nations. I will make you most fruitful.

I will make you into nations, and your issue shall be kings. I will establish my Covenant between myself and you, and your descendants after you, generation after generation, a Covenant in perpetuity, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land you are living in, the whole land of Canaan, to own in perpetuity, and I will be your God.”

God said to Abraham, “You on your part shall maintain my Covenant, yourself and your descendants after you, generation after generation.

30th JANUARY, BIBLE READING (2 SAMUEL 7:18-19, 24-29)

WHO AM I, LORD, AND WHAT IS MY HOUSE?

King David went in and, seated before the Lord, said:
“Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have led me as far as this? Yet in your sight, Lord, this is still not far enough, and you make your promises extend to the House of your servant for a far-distant future. You have constituted your people Israel to be your own people for ever; and you, Lord, have become their God. Now, Lord, always keep the promise you have made your servant and his House, and do as you have said. Your name will be exalted for ever and men will say, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel.’ The House of your servant David will be made secure in your presence, since you yourself, Lord of hosts, God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, ‘I will build you a House’; hence your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you. Yes, Lord, you are God indeed, your words are true and you have made this fair promise to your servant. Be pleased, then, to bless the House of your servant, that it may continue for ever in your presence; for you, Lord, have spoken; and with your blessing the House of your servant will be for ever blessed.”
