GLORY TO THEE, MY GOD, THIS NIGHT (HYMN)

Glory to thee, my God, this night

For all the blessings of the light;

Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,

Beneath thy own almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,

The ill that I this day have done,

That with the world, myself, and thee,

I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Teach me to live, that I may dread

The grave as little as my bed;

Teach me to die, that so I may

Rise glorious at the awful day.

O may my soul on thee repose,

And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close,

Sleep that may me more vigorous make

To serve my God when I awake.

When in the night I sleepless lie,

My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;

Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,

No powers of darkness me molest.

You, my blest guardian, whilst I sleep

Close to my bed your vigils keep;

Divine love into me instil,

Stop all the avenues of I’ll.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,

Praise him, all creatures here below,

Praise him above, ye heavenly host,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

– Bishop T. Ken, 1637-1711

THE SUN IS SINKNG FAST (HYMN)

The sun is sinking fast,

The daylight dies;

Let love awake, and pay

Her evening sacrifice.

As Christ upon the Cross,

In death reclined,

Into his Father’s hands

His parting soul reclined,

So now herself my soul

Would wholly give

Into his sacred charge,

In whom all spirits live;

So now beneath his eye

Would calmly rest,

Without a wish or thought

Abiding in the breast,

Save that his will be done,

Whate’er betide,

Dead to herself, and dead

In him to all beside.

Thus would I live; yet now

Not I, but he

In all his power and love

Henceforth alive in me –

One sacred Trinity,

One Lord Divine,

Myself for ever his,

And he for ever mine!

– Sol praeceps rapitur

SUN OF MY SOUL, THOU SAVIOUR DEAR (HYMN)

Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear,

It is not night if thou be near:

O may no earth-born cloud arise

To hide thee from thy servant’s eyes.

When the soft dews of kindly sleep

My wearied eyelids gently steep,

By my last thought, how sweet to rest

For ever on my Saviour’s breast.

Abide with me from morn till eve,

For without thee I cannot live;

Abide with me when night is high,

For without thee I dare not die.

If some poor wandering child of thine

Have spurned to-day the voice divine,

Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;

Let him no more lie down in sin.

Watch by the sick; enrich the poor

With blessings from thy boundless store;

Be every mourner’s sleep to-night

Like infant’s slumbers, pure and light.

Come near and bless us when we wake,

Ere through the world our way we take;

Till the ocean of thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

– J. Keble, 1792-1866

SOL PRAECEPS RAPITUR – EVENING HYMN

THE SUN IS SINKING FAST (SOL PRAECEPS RAPITUR)

The sun is sinking fast,
The daylight dies;
Let love awake, and pay
Her evening sacrifice.

As Christ upon the Cross,
In death reclined,
Into his Father’s hands
His parting soul resigned,

So now herself my soul
Would wholly give
Into his sacred charge,
In whom all spirits live;

So now beneath his eye
Would calmly rest,
Without a wish or thought
Abiding in the breast,

Save that his will be done,
Whate’er betide,
Dead to herself, and dead
In him to all beside.

Thus would I live; yet now
Not I, but he
In all his power and love
Henceforth alive in me –

One sacred Trinity,
One Lord Divine,
Myself for ever his,
And he for ever mine!

O GOD-HEAD RULING OVER ALL (HYMN)

O God-head ruling over all,
Blest Trinity, eternal light,
Now sinks the fiery sun to rest,
Our hearts with holy rays make bright.

To you we sang our morning hymns,
As evening comes to you we pray
That it may be our heartfelt joy
To praise you for eternity.

To God the Father glory be,
And likewise to his only Son;
Glory to you, O Paraclete,
While everlasting ages run. Amen.
