AS FADES THE GLOWING ORB OF DAY (EVENING HYMN)

As fades the glowing orb of day,

To thee, great Source of Light, we pray;

Blest Three in One, to every heart

Thy beams of life and love impart.

At early dawn, at close of day,

To thee our vows we humbly pay;

May we, mid joys that never end,

With thy bright saints in homage bend.

To God the Father, and the Son,

And Holy Spirit, Three in One,

Be endless glory, as before

The world began, so evermore. Amen.

SUN OF MY SOUL, THOU SAVIOUR DEAR (HYMN)

Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear,

It is not night if thou be near:

O may no earth-born cloud arise

To hide thee from thy servant’s eyes.

When the soft dews of kindly sleep

My wearied eyelids gently steep,

By my last thought, how sweet to rest

For ever on my Saviour’s breast.

Abide with me from morn till eve,

For without thee I cannot live;

Abide with me when night is high,

For without thee I dare not die.

If some poor wandering child of thine

Have spurned to-day the voice divine,

Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;

Let him no more lie down in sin.

Watch by the sick; enrich the poor

With blessings from thy boundless store;

Be every mourner’s sleep to-night

Like infant’s slumbers, pure and light.

Come near and bless us when we wake,

Ere through the world our way we take;

Till the ocean of thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

– J. Keble, 1792-1866

SOL PRAECEPS RAPITUR – EVENING HYMN

THE SUN IS SINKING FAST (SOL PRAECEPS RAPITUR)

The sun is sinking fast,
The daylight dies;
Let love awake, and pay
Her evening sacrifice.

As Christ upon the Cross,
In death reclined,
Into his Father’s hands
His parting soul resigned,

So now herself my soul
Would wholly give
Into his sacred charge,
In whom all spirits live;

So now beneath his eye
Would calmly rest,
Without a wish or thought
Abiding in the breast,

Save that his will be done,
Whate’er betide,
Dead to herself, and dead
In him to all beside.

Thus would I live; yet now
Not I, but he
In all his power and love
Henceforth alive in me –

One sacred Trinity,
One Lord Divine,
Myself for ever his,
And he for ever mine!
(c.18th cent. Tr. E. Caswall)

SAVIOUR, AGAIN TO THY DEAR NAME WE RAISE (HYMN)

EVENING PRAYER/HYMN

Saviour, again to thy dear name we raise
With one accord our parting hymn of praise.
Guard thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame,
That in this house have called upon thy name.

Grant us thy peace, Lord, through the coming night;
Turn thou for us its darkness into light;
From harm and danger keep thy children free,
For dark and light are both alike to thee.

Grant us thy peace throughout our earthly life;
Peace to thy Church from error and from strife;
Peace to our land, the fruit of truth and love;
Peace in each heart, thy Spirit from above:

Thy peace in life, the balm of every pain;
Thy peace in death, the hope to rise again;
Then, when thy voice shall bid our conflict cease,
Call us, O Lord, to thine eternal peace.
– J. Ellerton, 1826-93

BEFORE THE ENDING OF THE DAY (HYMN)

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray,
That you with wonted love would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.

O let no evil dreams be near,
Or phantoms of the night appear;
Our ghostly enemy restrain,
Lest aught of sin our bodies stain.

Our prayer, most loving Father, hear
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son,
Who with the Holy Paraclete
Now reigns while endless ages run.

“LET OUR EVENING PRAYER RISE BEFORE YOU LIKE INCENSE, O LORD”

INTERCESSIONS FOR THE EVENING:

Response after each line (R): Lord, hear our prayer.

May your kingdom of peace and justice be realised on earth as in heaven – (R)

Show yourself to all who seek you in sincerity of heart – (R)

Lord Jesus Christ, Light of all the nations, shine upon those who walk in darkness and in the shadow of death – (R)

Be with all those who suffer in mind, body or spirit – (R)

Show mercy on the dead, bring them to rejoice in the company of the blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints – (R)

Our Father…

Let our evening prayer rise before you like incense, O Lord, and may your blessing shower down upon us: so that now and for ever your grace may heal and save us. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen. + May the Lord bless us, keep us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.

NOW WITH THE FAST-DEPARTING LIGHT (EVENING HYMN)

Now with the fast-departing light,
maker of all! We ask of thee,
of thy great mercy, through the night
our guardian and defence to be.

Far off let idle visions fly;
no phantom of the night molest:
curb thou our raging enemy,
that we in chaste repose may rest.

Father of mercies! hear our cry:
hear us, O sole-begotten Son!
Who, with the Holy Ghost most high,
reignest while endless ages run.
– 7th century, tr. Edward Caswall
