THE SUN IS SINKNG FAST (HYMN)

The sun is sinking fast,

The daylight dies;

Let love awake, and pay

Her evening sacrifice.

As Christ upon the Cross,

In death reclined,

Into his Father’s hands

His parting soul reclined,

So now herself my soul

Would wholly give

Into his sacred charge,

In whom all spirits live;

So now beneath his eye

Would calmly rest,

Without a wish or thought

Abiding in the breast,

Save that his will be done,

Whate’er betide,

Dead to herself, and dead

In him to all beside.

Thus would I live; yet now

Not I, but he

In all his power and love

Henceforth alive in me –

One sacred Trinity,

One Lord Divine,

Myself for ever his,

And he for ever mine!

– Sol praeceps rapitur

Tr. E. Caswall

SUN OF MY SOUL, THOU SAVIOUR DEAR (HYMN)

Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear,

It is not night if thou be near:

O may no earth-born cloud arise

To hide thee from thy servant’s eyes.

When the soft dews of kindly sleep

My wearied eyelids gently steep,

By my last thought, how sweet to rest

For ever on my Saviour’s breast.

Abide with me from morn till eve,

For without thee I cannot live;

Abide with me when night is high,

For without thee I dare not die.

If some poor wandering child of thine

Have spurned to-day the voice divine,

Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;

Let him no more lie down in sin.

Watch by the sick; enrich the poor

With blessings from thy boundless store;

Be every mourner’s sleep to-night

Like infant’s slumbers, pure and light.

Come near and bless us when we wake,

Ere through the world our way we take;

Till the ocean of thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

– J. Keble, 1792-1866

A SHORT NIGHT PRAYER

O my God, I adore you, and I love you with all my heart. I thank you for having created me and saved me by your grace, and for having preserved me during this day.

I pray that you will take for yourself whatever good I might have done this day and that you will forgive me whatever evil I have done. Protect me this night, and may your grace be always with me and with those I love. Amen.

O STRENGTH AND STAY UPHOLDING ALL CREATION (HYMN)

O Strength and Stay upholding all creation,
who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,
yet day by day the light in due gradation
from hour to hour through all its changes guide.

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,
an eve untouched by shadows of decay,
the brightness of a holy deathbed blending
with dawning glories of the eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
through Jesus Christ thy co-eternal Word,
who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
now and to endless ages art adored.
– St Ambrose, 4th century
tr. J. Ellerton and F.J.A. Hort

I PLACE MYSELF IN YOUR MOST SACRED SIDE (BED-TIME PRAYER)

Jesus Christ, my God, I adore You and I thank You for the many favours You have bestowed on me this day. I offer You my sleep and all the moments of this night, and I pray You to preserve me from sin.

Therefore, I place myself in Your most sacred Side, and under the mantle of our Blessed Lady, my Mother. May the holy angels assist me and keep me in peace, and may Your blessing be upon me. Amen.
