A PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY

Lord Jesus Christ,

who, being made subject

to Mary and Joseph,

did consecrate domestic life

by Your unspeakable virtues;

grant that we,

with the assistance of both,

may be taught by the example

of Your Holy Family,

and may attain to

its everlasting fellowship.

Who lives and reigns,

world without end.

Amen.

CALLING ALL CATHOLIC CHRISTIANS: PRAYER FOR THIS MONTH’S SYNOD

“Pope Francis has asked that during this month of the Holy Rosary families say the rosary together for the Synod along with the following prayer which he composed, to be prayed for the duration of the synodal assembly (5th October – 19th October):

PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY FOR THE SYNOD

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen.”
– c/o St William of York

HOLY FAMILY HYMNS

1. Their mutual love unites the three,
The Virgin, Joseph and their Son;
In his return of love to them
We learn what family life should be.

O see with what a heart and hand
Jesus obeys his father’s will,
And with what joy the Virgin hastes,
Her mother’s duties to fulfil.

To you, O Lord, who dwelt on earth
Obedient as befits a son,
With Father and with Holy Ghost,
Be praise while endless ages run.

2. Of blessed light of saints in heav’n,
Of mortals’ Hope supreme on earth,
O Lord, on whom parental love
Smiled from the moment of your birth:

As night comes on, the sun which sets
Creation’s splendour takes away;
But we continue to pour fourth
Our heartfelt prayers, as here we stay.

To you, O Lord, who dwelt on earth
Obedient as befits a son,
With Father and with Holy Ghost,
Be praise while endless ages run.

3. O Mary, so thoughtful, you nurture your Son,
A good wife as well, you care for your husband,
Indeed you are happy if, by some service,
You ease their fatigue.

Help us poor wretches, driven on by our needs
Through the misfortunes which abound in this life;
To toil and to labour you were not strangers,
You all knew distress.

O Jesus, to you be glory and honour,
Whose life, by example, showed how we should live;
In heav’n you are reigning now with the Father,
One in the Spirit. Amen.

“FATHER OF ALL, YOU GAVE US THE HOLY FAMILY TO SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE”

Let us adore the Son of the living God and beg him:

R. Sanctify us, Lord Jesus, by your obedience!

Son of God and Son of Man, you were born into a human family:
– strengthen the bonds of love and reverence in every family. (R.)

Eternal Word of the Father, you subjected yourself to Mary and Joseph:
– teach us humility. (R.)

Creator of the universe, you were known as the son of a carpenter:
– teach us to reverence the gift of work. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

God and Father of all, you gave us the Holy Family to serve as an example of love and obedience. Grant to all people, in family homes or alone, the grace to hold in honour the bonds of love and respect that bind the human race chosen for adoption as your children, through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY FAMILY

1. Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, by your obedience to Mary and Joseph, you sanctified family life with unequalled virtues. With their help may we learn from the example of your Holy Family and so come to share with them eternal happiness: You who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

2. Lord, may the love and deep faith
of the Holy Family,
be a source of strength and hope
to all families in our world.

Lord, may the joyful hope and trust
of the Holy Family,
be a guide and witness
to all families in our world.

Lord, may all families use,
with generous hearts,
the gifts you have given them,
to love and serve you,
and bring peace to our world.
Amen.

3. O God, who were pleased to give us
the shining example of the Holy Family,
graciously grant that we may imitate them
in practising the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity,
and so, in the joy of your house,
delight one day in eternal rewards.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

28th DECEMBER, GOSPEL READING (MATTHEW 2:13-18)

After the wise men had left, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and do away with him.” So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I called my son out of Egypt.

Herod was furious when he realised that he had been outwitted by the wise men, and in Bethlehem and its surrounding district he had all the male children killed who were two years old or under, reckoning by the date he had been careful to ask the wise men. It was then that the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled: A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loudly lamenting: it was Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted because they were no more.

V. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
