INTERCESSION IS THE CHARACTERISTIC OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

INTERCESSION IS THE CHARACTERISTIC OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

Every one knows, who has any knowledge of the Gospel, that Prayer is one of its special ordinances; but not every one, perhaps, has noticed what kind of prayer its inspired teachers most carefully enjoin… Yet it is observable, that though prayer for self is the first and plainest of Christian duties, the Apostles especially insist on another kind of prayer; prayer for others, for ourselves with others, for the Church, and the world, that it may be brought into the Church. Intercession is the characteristic of Christian worship.

– St John Henry Newman; In prayer we show our love for others and their needs. P. S. III, 350

“MANNA FROM HEAVEN”: INTERCESSIONS ON THE SOLEMNITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI

Let us rejoice in the Lord Jesus, our Bread of Life:

R. Happy are they who are invited to your table, Lord!

Priest of the new and eternal covenant, you offered the perfect sacrifice on the altar of the cross:
– grant us the grace to offer ourselves in union with you. (R.)

King of justice and peace, you deliver yourself over in the form of bread and wine:
– grant that we may receive you with faith. (R.)

Manna from heaven, you nourish your Church with your body and your blood:
– strengthen us in our journey to the Father. (R.)

Source of life, you give life to all:
– strengthen all parents in their task of bringing to harvest the goodness of those lives for which they are responsible. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

Lord Jesus Christ, in this most wonderful sacrament, you left us a memorial of your Passion, Death, and Resurrection; grant us so to venerate the mysteries of your body and blood, that we may ever find in them the fruit of your redemption, who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS ON THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

If nothing can separate us from the love of God made manifest in the human heart of Jesus Christ, then nothing is too small or too great for his concern.

R. Hear us in our need.

Lord Jesus Christ, in you dwells the fullness of divinity:
– enliven our frail humanity with your love. (R.)

Lord Jesus Christ, in you the Father pours out his love upon the earth:
– redeem us in our lovelessness. (R.)

Lord Jesus Christ, from the fullness of your love we have all received:
– may your love overflow into the lives of all we meet. (R.)

Lord Jesus Christ, in your love is all our hope for the life to come:
– lead us in the way of salvation. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

O God our Father, in honouring the heart of your beloved Son, we tell the wonders of your love for all people.
May your Church always mirror your love to the whole world, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS FOR PENTECOST

With confidence, let us pray to the Father who created the Church through the gift of the Spirit:

R. Renew, O Lord, the face of the earth!

O Christ, seated in glory at the right hand of God, you poured forth on your disciples the Holy Spirit received from the Father:
– send your Spirit to make new the world. (R.)

O Christ, you breathed upon your Apostles, giving them the Spirit for the remission of sins:
– send your Spirit to wash away our faults. (R.)

O Christ, you promised that the Spirit would teach us all things and remind us of what you yourself had said:
– send your Spirit to enlighten our faith. (R.)

O Christ, you promised to send the Spirit of truth to bear witness to you:
– send your Spirit to enable us to give faithful testimony. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

Today, O Lord, through the mystery of Pentecost, you sanctify your Church in every place and nation. Pour out the gifts of the Spirit upon the whole world, and bring to completion in the hearts of your faithful the work of love which you began with your first proclamation of the kingdom, who live and reign with the Father and the same Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

GOD IS OUR PROMISED SHELTER AND OUR SHADE

God is our promised shelter and our shade. To him we pray:

R. Protect us from all harm.

In the midst of life’s tribulations,
– strengthen our hope in your promised kingdom. (R.)

In the midst of physical ailments,
– grant us trust in your healing power. (R.)

In the midst of worry and distress,
– send us peace of heart. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

May the blessing of almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, descend on us and remain with us for ever. Amen.

MAY THE LORD BLESS US FROM ZION, HE WHO MADE BOTH HEAVEN AND EARTH

Jesus Christ is the head of his Body, the Church. With him, in him, and through him, we pray:

R. Hear your people, Lord our God.

We have been scattered and divided by the power of sin:
– gather all nations into the one Body of Christ by the power of the cross. (R.)

We are confronted with many gods competing for our obedience and our worship:
– guard us in temptation that we may worship you alone as our one true God. (R.)

We live in the shadow of death:
– raise us up to give you thanks and praise in the temple of the new Jerusalem. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

May the Lord bless us from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth. Amen. (c.f. Ps 133:3)

INTERCESSIONS THROUGH ST PATRICK

We ask the intercession of Saint Patrick to support us as we pray:

R. Come Holy Spirit, into our hearts and lives.

You renew the face of the earth in all times:
– renew our world today. (R.)

You overshadowed the Blessed Virgin Mary:
– cast your bright shadow over the Church. (R.)

You descended on your Son like a dove:
– bring us peace and wisdom in his name. (R.)

You gave the Apostles tongues of fire:
– enable us to speak of your truth even in the darkest shadows. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

God our Father, you converted a people to the glory of your name through the preaching of Saint Patrick. Inspire us by his spirit to walk in holiness, and help us to teach the Gospel to those around us, that our nation may turn again to you, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
