21st MARCH, RESPONSORIAL PSALM (PSALM 104)

R. Remember the wonders the Lord has done.

1. God called down a famine on the land;
he broke the staff that supported them.
He had sent a man before them,
Joseph, sold as a slave. (R.)

2. His feet were put in chains,
his neck was bound with iron,
until what he said came to pass
and the Lord’s word proved him true. (R.)

3. Then the king sent and released him;
the ruler of the peoples set him free,
making him master of his house
and ruler of all he possessed. (R.)

ACCLAMATION

God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son;
everyone who believes in him has eternal life.

21st MARCH, BIBLE READING (GENESIS 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-28)

HERE COMES THE MAN OF DREAMS. COME ON, LET US KILL HIM.

Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had a coat with long sleeves made for him. But his brothers, seeing how his father loved him more than all his other sons, came to hate him so much that they could not say a civil word to him.

His brothers went to pasture their father’s flock at Shechem. Then Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers with the flock at Shechem? Come, I am going to send you to them.” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot among themselves to put him to death. “Here comes the man of dreams,” they said to one another. “Come on, let us kill him and throw him into some well; we can say that a wild beast devoured him. Then we shall see what becomes of his dreams.”

But Reuben heard, and he saved him from their violence. “We must not take his life,” he said. “Shed no blood,” said Reuben to them, “throw him into this well in the wilderness, but do not lay violent hands on him” – intending to save him from them and to restore him to his father. So, when Joseph reached his brothers, they pulled off his coat, the coat with the long sleeves that he was wearing, and catching hold of him they threw him into the well, an empty well with no water in it. They then sat down to eat.

Looking up they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming from Gilead, their camels laden with gum, tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking down into Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, “What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, but let us not do any harm to him. After all, he is our brother, and our own flesh.” His brothers agreed.

Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they drew Joseph out of the well. They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silver pieces, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

“FATHER OF ALL, YOU GAVE US THE HOLY FAMILY TO SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE”

Let us adore the Son of the living God and beg him:

R. Sanctify us, Lord Jesus, by your obedience!

Son of God and Son of Man, you were born into a human family:
– strengthen the bonds of love and reverence in every family. (R.)

Eternal Word of the Father, you subjected yourself to Mary and Joseph:
– teach us humility. (R.)

Creator of the universe, you were known as the son of a carpenter:
– teach us to reverence the gift of work. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

God and Father of all, you gave us the Holy Family to serve as an example of love and obedience. Grant to all people, in family homes or alone, the grace to hold in honour the bonds of love and respect that bind the human race chosen for adoption as your children, through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY FAMILY

1. Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, by your obedience to Mary and Joseph, you sanctified family life with unequalled virtues. With their help may we learn from the example of your Holy Family and so come to share with them eternal happiness: You who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

2. Lord, may the love and deep faith
of the Holy Family,
be a source of strength and hope
to all families in our world.

Lord, may the joyful hope and trust
of the Holy Family,
be a guide and witness
to all families in our world.

Lord, may all families use,
with generous hearts,
the gifts you have given them,
to love and serve you,
and bring peace to our world.
Amen.

3. O God, who were pleased to give us
the shining example of the Holy Family,
graciously grant that we may imitate them
in practising the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity,
and so, in the joy of your house,
delight one day in eternal rewards.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

28th DECEMBER, GOSPEL READING (MATTHEW 2:13-18)

After the wise men had left, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and do away with him.” So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I called my son out of Egypt.

Herod was furious when he realised that he had been outwitted by the wise men, and in Bethlehem and its surrounding district he had all the male children killed who were two years old or under, reckoning by the date he had been careful to ask the wise men. It was then that the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled: A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loudly lamenting: it was Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted because they were no more.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

4th SUNDAY OF ADVENT, GOSPEL READING (MATTHEW 1:18-25)

This is how Jesus Christ was born: Mary his mother had been given to Joseph in marriage, but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

Then Joseph, her husband, made plans to divorce her in all secrecy. He was an upright man, and in no way did he want to discredit her. While he was pondering over this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She has conceived by the Holy Spirit, and now she will bear a son. You shall call him ‘Jesus’ for he will save his people from their sins.”

All this happened in order to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called Emmanuel, which means: God-with-us. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do, and he took his wife to his home. So she gave birth to a son and he had not had marital relations with her. Joseph gave him the name Jesus.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

18th DECEMBER, GOSPEL READING (MATTHEW 1:18-24)

JESUS IS BORN OF MARY WHO WAS BETROTHED TO JOSEPH, SON OF DAVID.

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally.

He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.”

Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son
and they will call him Emmanuel,
a name which means “God-is-with-us”.

When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to his home.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
