MY SECRET OF HAPPINESS

How is it you are always so amiable? some person enquired of a woman to whom God seemed to have given the power of happiness.

It is a very simple thing, she replied. Before paying a visit, or even joining our family circle, I examine the depths of my soul to see if it is at peace with God.

If I find such as I desire, I say to myself, It is well! God is with me; it is He who will do all. It is not I who am amiable: it is God to whom I have yielded myself up. In vain do annoyances come upon me; my vexation hides itself behind the good God.

For instance, when I have received Holy Communion, can they receive Jesus ungraciously, who is within me and tells me: “Be loving, kind and devoted,” and whom I obey? And are we not always amiable, and do we not make others happy when we are affectionate and unselfish?

A priest said to me not long ago: “Bear Jesus with you to all whom you meet; they will be very wicked if they do not experience a little happiness.” And I did so… My only secret is that I do not let Jesus Christ leave my heart.

JOY IN LIFE IS LIKE OIL IN A LAMP

Joy in life is like oil in a lamp.

When the oil commences to fail, the wick burns with a smouldering red flame, filling the air about it with thick smoke.

Life also, without a little joy, burns unprofitably, filling the air about it with depression and sadness.

Like opening a window to admit fresh air and sunshine

If every morning, by a resigned and simple prayer – by that quarter of an hour of meditation which only seems difficult when we do not practise it – we would open our hearts to God, as we open a window to admit air and sunshine, God would put there for the day that sweet, calm joy which elevates the soul, causes it to feel less the weight of sorrow, and makes it experience the desire of overflowing with kindness.

We are never so good as when we are the possessors of a joyful heart.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (GALATIANS 5:18-25)

(Week 28 of the year: Wednesday)

YOU CANNOT BELONG TO CHRIST UNLESS YOU CRUCIFY ALL SELF-INDULGENT PASSIONS AND DESIRES.

But if you are led by the spirit, you are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury,

Idolatry, witchcraft, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects,

Envies, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity,

Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law.

And they that are Christ’s, have crucified their flesh, with the vices and concupiscences.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

CHRISTIANS ARE “NEVER LESS ALONE THAN WHEN ALONE”

“The Christian has a deep, silent, hidden peace, which the world sees not… What he is when left to himself and to his God, that is his true life.

He can bear himself; he can (as it were) joy in himself, for it is the grace of God within him, it is the presence of the Eternal Comforter in which he joys.

He can bear, he finds it pleasant, to be with himself at all times – ‘never less alone than when alone’. He can lay his head on his pillow at night, and own in God’s sight, with overflowing heart, that he wants nothing – that he ‘is full and abounds’ – that God has been all things to him, and that nothing is not his which God could give him. More thankfulness, more holiness, more of heaven he needs indeed, but the thought that he can have more is not a thought of trouble, but of joy.”
– Bl. John Henry Newman, ‘Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, no one will take it from you’ (P.S. V, 69-70)

PRAYER TO ST PHILIP NERI, PATRON SAINT OF HAPPINESS, FOR A SPECIAL REQUEST

O holy St Philip Neri, patron saint of joy, you who trusted Scripture’s promise that the Lord is always at hand and that we need not to have anxiety about anything:

In your compassion heal our worries and sorrows and lift the burdens from our hearts. We come to you as one whose heart swells with abundant love for God and all creation. Hear us, we pray, especially in this need

(make your request here).

Keep us safe through your loving intercession, and may the joy of the Holy Spirit which filled your heart, St Philip, transform our lives and bring us peace. Amen.

TODAY’S GOSPEL READING (JOHN 16:16-20)

YOU WILL BE SORROWFUL, BUT YOUR SORROW WILL TURN TO JOY.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“In a short time you will no longer see me,
and then a short time later you will see me again.”

Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean, ‘In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again’ and, ‘I am going to the Father’? What is this ‘short time’? We don’t know what he means.” Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, “You are asking one another what I meant by saying: In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again.

“I tell you most solemnly,
you will be weeping and wailing
while the world will rejoice;
you will be sorrowful,
but your sorrow will turn to joy.”

V. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

TO BE UNITED WITH THE RISEN LORD JESUS, YOU MUST LEARN TO LIVE IN A HOLY AND UNALTERABLE PEACE

“If you want to be united with the Heart of Jesus risen from the dead, you must learn to live in a holy and unalterable peace. This was the word, greeting and wish that the risen Jesus had on His lips during the forty days He remained on earth after His resurrection. It is also the characteristic of those who have risen with Jesus. Peace, as St Augustine says, is simplicity of spirit, serenity of mind, tranquillity of soul, the bond of love.

Peace means order and harmony between all mankind, and is the greatest good, after the grace of God. It is the ongoing joy that is born out of a clear conscience, it is the holy happiness of a heart in which God reigns. Peace is the way of perfection or rather perfection is to be found in peace.

Find peace with God then!

You will achieve it by avoiding every sin, by submitting to His desires and by making Him the centre of your life.
Find peace with yourself!

You will achieve it by dominating your passions, keeping your desires under control, by moderating your words and actions and directing all your efforts and affections towards the true good.

Find peace with your neighbour!

You will achieve it with patience, humility and love, by seeing God in all your brothers.

The devil makes every effort to take peace away from you, for without it, nothing for eternal life can be achieved. You must be on your guard, so as not to lose it, even in the many problems that life throws up.
PRAYER: Beautiful Heart of Jesus, may I to this world in death be given, that I may for God and with you be risen.”
– Mons. Nicola Tafuri
