JESUS SAID TO THEM: “WHY ARE YE FEARFUL, YE MEN OF LITTLE FAITH?”

The Tempest

“Jesus had entered into a boat, with his disciples. And behold a storm began to upheave the sea, and the bark, invaded by the waves, seemed on the point of being engulfed. But He slept. ‘Lord,’ cried out the terrified disciples, ‘Lord save us, we perish!’ Jesus said to them: ‘Why are ye fearful, ye men of little faith?’ Then, rising, He commanded the winds and the sea, and immediately there was a great calm.

Lord, save us, we perish!

Alas! that bark, those heaving waves, those raging winds, are they not an image of man here below?

A vivid description of our lives here below

As a bark launched on the waves encounters are thousand perils, and struggles with the storm, so man, on the stormy sea of this life is exposed to all kinds of perils and dangers: temptations, scandals, bad advice, dangerous occasions, human respect [the fear of what people might think or say about oneself]: then there are our passions, like furious winds, tossing our bark, and threatening to upset it, in order to engulf it in the waves of sin.

I have lifted up my eyes towards the holy mountains, from thence comes my help

What are we to do, in the midst of a storm, and amidst all those dangers? – “I have lifted up my eyes towards the holy mountains,’ said David ‘it is thence that help will come to me.’ Just as the pilot keeps his eyes fixed on the star which will guide him to the port, so must we always look to Jesus, and address to Him always our cry of distress, and of confidence: ‘Lord, save us, we perish!’

Lord, save me!

No, Lord, I do not rely on myself; for You have said: ‘Cursed is the man who puts his trust in man.’ Let me then always say to You: ‘Lord, save me!’

“WHAT IS CONCEIVED IN HER IS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT” (Mt 1:17)

• “‘What is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit’ (Matthew 1:17)

• ‘The Church believes that the key, the centre and the purpose of the whole of human history is to be found in its Lord and Master (Gaudium et Spes 10).

• The title Christ comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Messiah which means ‘anointed’. Jesus is the Lord’s Anointed, the promised Messiah and Saviour. ‘To you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour who is Christ the Lord.’ (Luke 2:11). The name ‘son of God’ was given to angels, the people of Israel and kings. However, St Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Son of the Living God could only have been revealed to him by the grace of revelation, a gift from God the Father. The Hebrew name YHWH is translated into Greek as ‘Kyrios’. The New Testament uses the title Lord to describe God the Father but also for Jesus. To confess that Jesus is Lord is to believe in his divinity.

• Father, no one can know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God or Lord, except by the power of the Holy Spirit. Give me that Spirit in abundance.

• Our Father…, ten Hail Marys…, Glory be…

• Today my prayer is for… ”

9th JULY, RESPONSORIAL PSALM (PSALM 16)

R. As for me, in my justice I shall see your face.

1. Lord, hear a cause that is just,
pay heed to my cry.
Turn your ear to my prayer:
no deceit is on my lips. (R.)

2. From you may my judgement come forth.
Your eyes discern the truth.
You search my heart, you visit me by night.
You test me and you find in me no wrong. (R.)

3. I am here and I call, you will hear me, O God.
Turn your ear to me; hear my words.
Display your great love, you whose right hand saves
your friends from those who rebel against them. (R.)

4. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
As for me, in my justice I shall see your face
and be filled, when I awake, with the sight of your glory. (R.)

ALLELUIA

Alleluia, alleluia!
May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
enlighten the eyes of our mind,
so that we can see what hope his call holds for us.

TODAY’S PSALM (PSALM 29)

Give the Lord, O sons of God,
give the Lord glory and strength,
give the Lord the glory due to his name;
worship the Lord in great liturgy.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over vast waters.
How powerful is the voice of the Lord,
how splenderous is the voice of the Lord.

The voice of the Lord tears up the cedars,
the Lord is shattering the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild bull.

The voice of the Lord breaks forth with flashes of fire,
the voice of the Lord makes the wilderness quake,
the Lord is shaking the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the oaks shudder,
the Lord strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

Over the flood the Lord was sitting;
the Lord is king and he reigns forever.
May the Lord give his people strength;
may the Lord bless his people with peace!
