MATER DEI, MATER MEI – GOD’S MOTHER IS MY MOTHER

MATER DEI, MATER MEI – GOD’S MOTHER IS MY MOTHER

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE IT?

Mary is our Mother. – Most of us realise this fact in a vague sort of way. We have heard it since we were old enough to remember. We have been accustomed to referring to Mary as our Blessed Mother.

Yet, do we really believe it? We have a mother who brought us into the world. Perhaps she is still living. If not, we probably have vivid memories of her. We can’t have two mothers, can we? Mary is our mother in a figurative sense, she is called our mother because she has taken such an interest in us.

That is the way many of us would express our thoughts on the matter if we should ever stop to analyse them.

This attitude, however, is not correct. We do have two mothers, a mother in the natural order and a mother in the supernatural order.

Mary is our mother in the supernatural order. She is really and truly our mother, just as much so as is our mother in the natural order.

MARY MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR US TO RECEIVE SUPERNATURAL LIFE

A mother is one who gives life. Our earthly mother gave us our life in this world, our natural life. Mary has given us the life that elevates our life in this world and flowers in the next, our supernatural life.

After the sin of Adam, our souls were deprived of supernatural life. This life was restored through the Redemption of Christ and Baptism. Mary made it possible for us to receive this life. She did this at Nazareth, on Calvary and at our Baptism.

At Nazareth the angel Gabriel brought to Mary the most wonderful news that has ever been given to any human being. He told her that she had been chosen to be the Mother of God. Mary’s consent was needed, before the Incarnation could take place. She thought of us at that moment. By answering “No” she could have left us in death. By answering “Yes”she could give us life. She gave her consent and the Word was made Flesh. Our Redemption had been made possible.

ABOUT 34 YEARS LATER…

About 34 years later Mary stood on the hill of Calvary beneath the cross on which her divine Son was giving His life for us. He was dying that we might be delivered from sin and death. Mary united her sacrifice with His. She thought of us, her children, at that moment. She bravely and generously offered her Son to the Father for our salvation. Never did any creature make such a sacrifice. And she did it for us. Mary, ever Virgin, experienced only joy when she brought Jesus into the world. When she gave us our spiritual birth, she underwent the most agonising sorrow.

Again at Baptism Mary gave us spiritual life. It was by her intercession that we had the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Baptism fruitfully .

LIFE WITHOUT END

Because of Mary, then, we can hope to enjoy the eternal happiness of heaven. She has given us our life in the next world. This “is not a passing life like your terrestrial one, but a life without end,” says Father Emil Neubert, S. M., in My Ideal-Jesus, Son of Mary. “Not a life full of imperfections and anguish like our present existence, but a life incomparably happy; not a created life, human or angelical, but – and understand it well – a participation in uncreated life, in the very life of God, the life of the Most Blessed Trinity. And that is why this life will be endless and incomparably happy, because it is a sharing in the eternity and in the beatitude of God.”

So the life that Mary has given us is much greater than the life we are now living. She is truly our spiritual mother.

EACH OF US CAN REPEAT THIS TREMENDOUS TRUTH

St Stanislaus Kostka used to repeat with great happiness, “Mater Dei, Mater mei” – “God’s Mother is my Mother.” Each of us can repeat this tremendous truth.

Mary’s Immaculate Heart was fashioned by her Creator so that God made Man could receive the perfect love of the perfect mother. Mary loves us with the same Immaculate Heart.

Because she loves us so much, she watches over us always. She guards the supernatural life which she has given us. If we should lose our supernatural life by falling into mortal sin, she can obtain for us the grace to recover it…

“God’s Mother is my Mother.” What a world of meaning in those words! What a depth of consolation and hope! If we but heed her pleas, if we but join our prayers with hers, we need have no fears.

THIS HOME IS AN EXAMPLE OF MARRIED LIFE AND OF VIRGINITY

THIS HOME IS AN EXAMPLE OF MARRIED LIFE AND OF VIRGINITY

ST ANNE, THE MOTHER OF OUR LADY

The home of Anne is set before us, giving an example at once of married life and of virginity, the first in the person of the mother, the second in that of the daughter; of whom the one has just been freed from sterility, and the other, a little later on, is to bring forth Christ in a supernatural birth, adapted by a divine artifice to the circumstances of our nature. Therefore, filled with the divine Spirit, her soul happy and joyous, deservedly does Anne cry aloud: “Rejoice with me, for from my sterile womb I have borne the bud of promise, and, as I had desired, I feed at my breast the fruit of blessing. I have put off the mourning-garment of sterility, and put on the joyful raiment of fruitfulness. Let that other Anne [Hannah], the rival of Phenenna, rejoice with me this day, and let her celebrate with me this new and unexpected miracle, which has been wrought in me, as it was in her.

LET ALL THE BARREN AND CHILDLESS SING IN HARMONY TOGETHER

Let Sara rejoice, she who rejoiced in conception in her old age, and foreshadowed my conception from sterility. Let all the barren and childless sing in harmony together at my visitation made to me from heaven in a wonderful manner.” Likewise, let all mothers endowed with this fruitfulness say: “Blessed be he who granted what they wished to those who prayed to him, and who gave fruit to the sterile, and granted her to bear that most happy bud, the Virgin who was the Mother of God according to the flesh, whose womb was a heaven, in which he dwelt whom no place can contain. And let us also offer praise becoming to these very things, that she who was called sterile now stands forth as the mother of a virgin mother. Let us say to her in the words of Scripture: “How blessed is the house of David, from which you have sprung, and the womb in which God fashioned the ark of sanctification,” that is, her from whom he himself was conceived without seed.

TRULY BLESSED ARE YOU, AND THRICE BLESSED

Truly blessed are you, and thrice blessed, you who have borne an infant given you by the blessing of God, that is to say, Mary, whose very name is likewise to be honoured in the highest degree; from whom came forth Christ, the flower of life; a Virgin whose origin was glorious, and whose child-bearing was above all the world. We also congratulate you, most blessed woman, for truly you have brought forth by the divine bounty the hope of all of us, that is, the child of promise. Blessed indeed are you, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. For the tongues of the godly magnify your offspring, and every joyful word is spoken concerning your child. It is truly fitting indeed, and most fitting it is, to praise her, who received a revelation by the divine goodness, and brought forth for us so great a fruit, from whom came forth the sweet Jesus.

“BLESSED INDEED IS MARY” – THOUGHTS ON THE ASSUMPTION

“Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today’s Solemnity celebrates the truth that the Blessed Virgin Mary, when she had completed her life here on earth, was in body and soul assumed into heaven. This solemnity has been celebrated in the Church since the seventh century and this truth was defined as an article of faith in 1950.

St Bernard of Clairvaux wrote of today, ‘We in our exile have sent on ahead of us our advocate who, as mother of our Judge and mother of mercy, will humbly and effectively look after everything that concerns our salvation. Today earth has sent a priceless gift up to heaven, so that by giving and receiving within the blessed bond of friendship, the human is wedded to the divine, earth to heaven, the depths to the heights… Blessed indeed is Mary, blessed in many ways, both in receiving the Saviour, and in being received by the Saviour.’

A French mystic writer of the seventeenth century wrote, ‘There is nothing more wonderful than this life of Jesus and Mary; the holy life that he pours continuously into her, the divine life with which he animates her, loving and praising and adoring God his Father in her, giving a worthy supplement to her heart wherein he abounds with pleasure.’

We are reminded so often that Jesus loves it when people give honour to His Mother. Today we continue our prayers to Mary and honour her in the great privilege that has been afforded her today. We can make our own the opening prayer of today’s Mass:

‘Almighty ever-living God,

who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary,

the Mother of your Son,

body and soul into heavenly glory,

grant we pray,

that, always attentive to the things that are above,

we may merit to be sharers of her glory.'”

YE WHO OWN THE FAITH OF JESUS (HYMN)

Ye who own the faith of Jesus

Sing the wonders that were done,

When the love of God the Father

O’er our sin the victory won,

When he made the Virgin Mary

Mother of his only Son.

Hail Mary, full of grace.

Bless-ed were the chosen people

Out of whom the Lord did come,

Bless-ed was the land of promise

Fashioned for his earthly home;

But more bless-ed far the Mother

She who bare him in her womb.

Wherefore let all faithful people

Tell the honour of her name,

Let the Church in her foreshadowed

Part in her thanksgiving claim;

What Christ’s Mother sang in gladness

Let Christ’s people sing the same.

Let us weave our supplications,

She with us and we with her,

For the advancement of the faithful,

For each faithful worshipper,

for the doubting, for the sinful,

For each heedless wanderer.

May the Mother’s intercessions

On our homes a blessing win,

That the children all be prospered,

Strong and fair and pure within,

Following our Lord’s own footsteps,

Firm in faith and free from sin.

For the sick and for the ag-ed,

For our dear ones far away,

For the hearts that mourn in secret,

All who need our prayers to-day,

For the faithful gone before us,

May the holy Virgin pray.

Praise, O Mary, praise the Fat her,

Praise thy Saviour and thy Son,

Praise the everlasting Spirit,

Who hath made thee ark and throne;

O’er all creatures high exalted,

Lowly praise the Three in One. Amen.

WITH THIS MOTHER I WANT TO LIVE NOW, AND FOR ALL ETERNITY

Thanksgiving for Mary, Our Mother

O Jesus, Divine Master, I thank and bless your most merciful heart for having given us Mary Most Holy as our mother, teacher and queen. From the Cross you placed us all in her hands.

You gave her a great heart, much wisdom and immense power. May all mankind know her and pray to her. May all permit themselves to be led by her to you, the Saviour of mankind.

I place myself in her hands as you placed yourself. With this mother I want to live now, in the hour of my death and for all eternity. Amen.

I DESIRE NOTHING, O MARY, BUT TO COMPLY PERFECTLY WITH THE WILL OF THY DIVINE SON

Prayer to Our Lady

Behold me at thy feet, O Virgin most kind,

seeking to obtain through thee,

the most important grace of knowing what I ought to do.

I desire nothing but to comply perfectly

with the will of thy divine Son,

at every moment of my life.

I trust in thee, being confident

since thou are the mother of my Redeemer,

you will also be the mother of my salvation.

Amen.

HAIL, MOTHER OF OUR HOPE!

Temple of grace, habitation of glory and divine wisdom, you, whom God has initiated in all the secrets of the eternal plan!

Sanctifier of the world which you bless, you are the mistress of life, the cause of the great reconciliation!

Hail, you who ravish, captivate, absorb all intelligences: canticle and Alleluia which ring on the lips of all Christians; despair of the demons whom you have crushed; eternal praise of men and angels; repose of the heart.

Hail, arm for ever stretched above us to defend us; patron and protector of all sinners; pilot of humanity; gentle voice which recalls and re-animates the despairing; succour of virgins; support of orphans; joy of all who suffer.

You are the soul and spirit of all Christians; you are the type of divine grace; you are the principle of true life, and the Mother of all our hope. You are the ‘inventor’ of mercy, the road which connects the soul with paradise, the portal of heaven. Pray, pray for us!
– St Anselm
