TODAY’S GOSPEL READING (LUKE 11:1-4)

TODAY’S GOSPEL READING (LUKE 11:1-4)

LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY.

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “Say this when you pray:

‘Father, may your name be held holy,
your kingdom come;
give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us.
And do not put us to the test.’”

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (APOCALYPSE 11:4-12)

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (APOCALYPSE 11:4-12)

Week 33 of the Year, Cycle II, Saturday

These two prophets have been a plague to the people of the world.

I, John, heard a voice saying: “These, my two witnesses, are the two olive trees and the two lamps that stand before the Lord of the world. Fire can come from their mouths and consume their enemies if anyone tries to harm them; and if anybody does try to harm them then he will certainly be killed in this way. They are able to lock up the sky so that it does not rain as long as they are prophesying; they are able to turn water into blood and strike the whole world with any plague as often as they like.

When they have completed their witnessing, the beast that comes out of the Abyss is going to make war on them and overcome them and kill them. Their corpses will lie in the main street of the Great City known by the symbolic names of Sodom and Egypt, in which their Lord was crucified. Man out of every people, ace, language and nation will stare at their corpses, for three-and-a-half days, not letting them be buried, and the people of the world will be glad about it and celebrate the event by giving presents to each other, because these two prophets have been a plague to the people of the world.”

After three-and-a-half days, God created life into their corpses and they stood up, and everybody who saw it happen was terrified; then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, “Come up here”, and while their enemies were watching, they went up to heaven in a cloud.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (APOCALYPSE 4:1-11)

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (APOCALYPSE 4:1-11)

Week 33 of the Year, Cycle II, Wednesday

Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty; he was, he is and he will be.

In my vision, I, John, saw a door open in heaven and heard the same voice speaking to me, the voice like a trumpet, saying, “Come up here: I will show you what is to come in the future.” With that, the Spirit possessed me and I saw a throne standing in heaven, and the One who was sitting on the throne, and the Person sitting there looked like a diamond and a ruby. There was a rainbow encircling the throne, and this looked like an emerald. Round the throne in a circle there were twenty-four thrones, and on them I saw twenty-four elders sitting, dressed in white robes with golden crowns on their heads.

Flashes of lightning were coming from the throne, and the sound of peals of thunder, and in front of the throne there were seven flaming lamps burning, the seven Spirits of God. Between the throne and myself was a sea that seemed to be made of glass, like crystal. In the centre, grouped round the throne itself, were four animals with many eyes, in front and behind.

The first animal was like a lion, the second like a bull, the third animal had a human face, and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle. Each of the four animals had six wings and had eyes all the way round as well as inside; and day and night they never stopped singing:

“Holy, Holy, Holy

is the Lord God, the Almighty;

he was, he is, and he is to come.”

Every time the animals glorified and honoured and gave thanks to the One sitting on the throne, who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders prostrated themselves before him to worship the One who lives for ever and ever, and threw down their crowns in front of the throne, saying, “You are our Lord and our God, you are worthy of glory and honour and power, because you made all the universe and it was only by your will that everything was made and exists.”

V. The word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

BIBLE READING II (2 THESSALONIANS 3:7-12); NOVEMBER 13

BIBLE READING II (2 THESSALONIANS 3:7-12); NOVEMBER 13

Week 33 of Year C, Sunday

We don’t get any nearer to perfection… simply by sitting and waiting.

You know how you are supposed to imitate us: now we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we ever have our meals at anyone’s table without paying for them; no, we worked night and day, slaving and straining, so as not to be a burden on any of you. This was not because we had no right to be, but in order to make ourselves an example for you to follow.

We gave you a rule when we were with you: not to let anyone have any food if he refused to do any work. Now we hear that there are some of you who are living in idleness, doing no work themselves but interfering with everyone else’s. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on people of this kind to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat.

V. The word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (HOSEA 11:1, 3-4, 8-9)

MY HEART RECOILS FROM IT.

Thus says the Lord:
When Israel was a child I loved him,
and I called my son out of Egypt.
I myself taught Ephraim to walk,
I took them in my arms;
yet they have not understood that I was the one looking after them.
I led them with reins of kindness,
with leading-strings of love.
I was like someone who lifts an infant close against his cheek;
stooping down to him I gave him his food.
My heart recoils from it,
my whole being trembles at the thought.
I will not give rein to my fierce anger,
I will not destroy Ephraim again,
for I am God, not man:
I am the Holy One in your midst
and I have no wish to destroy.

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
