LO! DIM SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT ARE WANING (MORNING HYMN)

LO! DIM SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT ARE WANING (MORNING HYMN)

Lo! dim shadows of the night are waning;

Lightsome and blushing, dawn of day returneth;

Fervent in spirit, to the world’s Creator

Pray we devoutly:

That he may pity sinners in their sighing,

Banish all trouble, kindly health bestowing;

And may he grant us, of his countless blessings,

Peace that is endless.

This be our portion, God forever blessed,

Father eternal, Son, and Holy Spirit,

Whose is the glory, which through all creation

Ever soundeth. Amen.

JOY IN LIFE IS LIKE OIL IN A LAMP

Joy in life is like oil in a lamp.

When the oil commences to fail, the wick burns with a smouldering red flame, filling the air about it with thick smoke.

Life also, without a little joy, burns unprofitably, filling the air about it with depression and sadness.

Like opening a window to admit fresh air and sunshine

If every morning, by a resigned and simple prayer – by that quarter of an hour of meditation which only seems difficult when we do not practise it – we would open our hearts to God, as we open a window to admit air and sunshine, God would put there for the day that sweet, calm joy which elevates the soul, causes it to feel less the weight of sorrow, and makes it experience the desire of overflowing with kindness.

We are never so good as when we are the possessors of a joyful heart.

– From: Golden Grains, Eighth Edition, H.M. Gill and Son, Dublin 1889

O PERSONS THREE WHO GOD ARE ONE (HYMN)

O Persons three who God are one,
And o’er the earth are sovereign king,
To chanting of your praise give ear
Which rising from our beds we sing.

The newly risen morning star
Proclaims the rising of the sun;
May heav’nly light enlighten us,
For night’s dark shades will soon be gone.

To God the Father glory be,
And likewise to his only Son,
Glory to you, O Paraclete,
While everlasting ages run. Amen.

(Glory is yours, O Trinity; glory is yours, O undivided Godhead, before all ages, now and for ever.)

MY FATHER, FOR ANOTHER NIGHT (HYMN)

1. My Father, for another night
of quiet sleep and rest,
for all the joy of morning light,
your holy Name be blest.

2. Now with the newborn day I give
myself again to you,
that as you will so I may live,
and what you will may do.

3. In all I do, things great or small,
in all I speak or frame,
your glory may I seek in all,
do all in Jesus’ Name.

4. My Father, for his sake, I pray
your child accept and bless;
and lead me by your grace today
in paths of righteousness.
– Henry W. Balder

MORNING OFFERING TO THE HOLY TRINITY

Most holy and adorable Trinity, one God in three persons, I praise You and give You thanks for all the favours You have bestowed upon me. Your goodness has preserved me until now. I offer You my whole being and in particular all my thoughts, words and deeds, together with all the trials I may undergo this day.

Give them Your blessing. May Your Divine Love animate them and may they serve Your greater glory. I make this morning offering in union with the Divine intentions of Jesus Christ Who offers himself daily in the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and in union with Mary, His Virgin Mother and our Mother, who always was the faithful handmaid of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

MORNING PRAYER

Lord, I thank You that You have brought me to the beginning of this day, defend me in the same by Your mighty power, and grant as I now rise after sleep, fresh and rejoicing, so my body after the sleep of death may rise spiritualized and blessed to dwell with You forever.
Keep me from the perils and dangers of this day; let me fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but let all my doings be ordered by Your governance, to do always what is righteous in Your sight, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
– Bl. John Henry Newman
