In a statement, his archbishop, Alfred Adewale Martins of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, described the monsignor, who was born in 16th November, 1910, as a man of many firsts.

He was the first Lagosian to be ordained Catholic priest and the pioneer Nigerian Catholic Chaplain of the Nigerian Army.

He was also the first Nigerian Director of the Nigerian Army Chaplaincy Services (Catholic). The statement added that a vigil Mass would be held on 9th June at St Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos.”

PRAISE THE LORD! LET THE EARTH HEAR HIS VOICE! (HYMN)

To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son;
who yielded his life in atonement for sin,
and opened the life gate that all may go in.

Chorus:

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son:
and give him the glory! Great things he has done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!
To every believer the promise of God;
the vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer and higher, the greater will be
our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.

The Church is surrounded by storm clouds today,
and many have wandered down heresy’s way.
But firmly we hold to the faith we’ve received
and know it’s in Jesus that we have believed.

And so we acclaim him our King and our Lord
who here on the throne of his altar adored,
has shared his new life so that we all might live
and go out to others his love now to give.

Father of Creation and Ruler of all,
grant the supplications of those who gather in your name.
Hear us as we lift up to you all we seek in prayer.

R. Let the words of my mouth
and the meditations of my heart
be acceptable in your sight, O Lord.

1. We pray for the canonisation of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi; that God in His mercy will raise him to sainthood. (R.)

2. We pray for our Holy Father, Pope Francis, all the Bishops, priests and religious; that God may continue to guide them as they minister to His people. (R.)

3. We pray for the Government of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Government of Nigeria led by Goodluck Jonathan and all world leaders; that through their leadership and with the help of God, peace and justice will reign. (R.)

4. We thank God for the many people who have received God’s favour through the intercession of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi. We pray that through the sacrifice of the Mass and his intercession, our individual needs may be met. (R.)

5. We pray for God’s blessings and favours on all the Nigerian Communities in England and Wales and all who promote the Cause of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi; that they may receive the grace of holiness and success in all their endeavours. (R.)

Hail Mary…

Let us pray. Hear, O Lord, the entreaty of your people made under the
patronage of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi,
who, through his Monastic Life of resignation to the will of
God showed your people the way to you.
Grant that they may rejoice in this present life,
and find help for life – eternal life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
– From the Mass in Thanksgiving on the feast of Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi, St George’s Cathedral, London, UK, hosted by the Nigerian Chaplaincy (booklet).
