Songs of praise the Angels sang,

Heaven with Alleluyas rang,

When creation was begun,

When God spake and it was done.

Songs of praise awoke the morn

When the Prince of Peace was born;

Songs of praise arose when he

Captive led captivity.

Heaven and earth must pass away,

Songs of praise shall crown that day;

God will make new heavens and earth,

Songs of praise shall hail their birth.

And will man alone be dumb

Till that glorious kingdom come?

No, the Church delights to raise

Psalms and hymns and songs of praise.

Saints below, with heart and voice,

Still in songs of praise rejoice;

Learning here, by faith and love,

Songs of praise to sing above.

Hymns of glory, songs of praise,

Father, unto thee we raise;

Jesus, glory unto thee,

Ever with the Spirit be. Amen.

– J. Montgomery, 1771-1854

R. Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

1. O God, be gracious and bless us
and let your face shed its light upon us.
So will your ways be known upon earth
and all nations learn your saving help. (R.)

2. Let the nations be glad and exult
for you rule the world with justice.
With fairness you rule the peoples,
you guide the nations on earth. (R.)

3. Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.
May God still give us his blessing
till the ends of the earth revere him. (R.)

R. The Lord is compassion and love.

1. My soul, give thanks to the Lord,
all my being, bless his holy name.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord
and never forget all his blessings. (R.)

2. It is he who forgives all your guilt,
who heals every one of your ills,
who redeems your life from the grave,
who crowns you with love and compassion. (R.)

3. His wrath will come to an end;
he will not be angry for ever.
He does not treat us according to our sins
nor repay us according to our faults. (R.)

4. For as the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who fear him.
As far as the east is from the west
so far does he remove our sins. (R.)

I will leave this place and go to my father and say:
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.”

Through the Immaculate Heart of Mary I offer to you, my God, this act of praise.

My God, I believe in you. I adore you. I hope in you and I love you. I beg pardon of you. I pray for those who do not believe; do not adore; do not hope; and do not love you.

I adore you, O Christ, and I praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

“[One Gospel passage] concerns the curing of the ten lepers by Jesus. Of the ten only one, a foreigner, comes back to say ‘thank you’. Perhaps we can reflect today on what some of the saints have said about giving thanks to God:

• ‘We must take heart, brothers and sisters, from what stuff we were created, who we were and what kind of creatures we were when we entered the world, as if from a tomb and from utter darkness. Having prepared for us bountifully before we were born, He who fashioned us and created us brought us into His world. Since, then, we owe all this to Him, we ought to give Him thanks for everything.’ (Pope St Clement I)

• ‘When you lie down on your bed, remember with thanksgiving the blessings and providence of God.’ (St Anthony the Great)

• ‘One act of thanksgiving when things go wrong with us is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclination.’ (St John of Avila)

• ‘If we have any natural defect, either in mind or body, let us not grieve and be sorry for ourselves. Who is there that ever receives a gift and tries to make bargains about it? Let us, then, return thanks for what He has bestowed on us. Who can tell whether, if we had a larger share of ability or stronger health, we would have possessed them to our destruction?’ (St Alphonsus Liguori)

• ‘Be eager for more frequent gatherings of thanksgiving to God and His glory. For when we meet in this way, the forces of Satan are rendered powerless and his destructive power is cancelled in the concord of your faith.’ (St Ignatius of Antioch)”

“There is a story about someone who had a friend who studied astronomy. One night he was with his friend who was looking through a telescope at the night sky. He was invited by his friend to look at a particularly spectacular distant star and was astonished at its beauty. His friend told him that the galaxy in which this star was situated contained about a thousand million stars.

‘Isn’t that truly wonderful,’ he told his friend, ‘and who made all those stars?’ His friend, who found it hard to believe in God, replied, ‘No one made them, they all came about by themselves.’

Sometime later this friend was invited to come round to have a meal. Having enjoyed the meal the friend asked, ‘That was a wonderful meal, who made it?’ ‘No one,’ was the response, ‘the meal came about all by itself.’ He had given his friend something to think about.

The Bible, in the book of Genesis, tells us that, ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.’ (1:1). St Augustine of Hippo wrote, ‘Creation is a great book. Look above you; look below you! Note it; read it! God didn’t write that book with ink. Instead, He set before your eyes the things that He had made. Can you ask for a louder voice than that? Why, heaven and earth cry out to you, ‘God made me!’

St Bonaventure challenges those who do not believe in the Creator God. ‘If there is anyone who is not enlightened by the sublime magnificence of created things, he is blind. If there is anyone who, seeing all these works of God, does not praise Him, he is dumb. If there is anyone who, from so many signs, cannot perceive God, that man is foolish.’

In our prayers let us thank and praise God for the beauty of His creation.”

Let us praise God whose mystery fills the universe with wonder:

R. We praise and exalt you above all for ever!

Blessed are you, O Lord our God; you created all things and pronounced them good:
– fill us with reverence for the works of your hands. (R.)

Blessed is your holy and glorious name; you created male and female in your image:
– fill us with reverence for our brothers and sisters. (R.)

Blessed are you in the firmament of the heavens; you reign over all creation:
– fill us with reverence for you who alone are God. (R.)
(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

O God, you are over all, in all, beyond all. Open our eyes to see the wonders that surround us; open our hearts to know the wonders of our brothers and sisters; open our lips to sing your praise. Restore all peoples in your image, who is Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, reigning with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
