JESUS LOVES US

JESUS LOVES US

Yes, the Sacred Heart of Jesus loves us. It loves us infinitely more than do all the angels and saints together, more than even we can love ourselves; it loves us to excess.

And indeed, what an excess of love, to love us from all eternity so that He has never been an instant without loving us, and has always loved us at the same time, and with the same love with which He has loved His Father in eternity.

Again, what an excess to love us to such an extent as to become man for us, to live for our sakes so laborious a life, and lastly to die for us on the arms of the cross; so that He has loved us more than His honour, more than His repose, more than His life!

Finally, what excess to remain for love of us in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, day and night; so that thirty-three years entirely devoted to our salvation did not suffice for the Heart of Jesus; He must remain with us in the tabernacle for nineteen centuries. What do I say? He takes the form of bread and wine, in order to be our food, and to contract the closest possible union with each one of us.

How many things are explained by these words: God can do all. “But”, says a holy man, “if you ask me how it can come to pass that God should love such a miserable creature as man, and love him to such a degree, I confess that I have no answer to give, and that it is a truth beyond my comprehension.”

IF WE SEEK GOLD, PURE AND UNALLOYED…

IF WE SEEK GOLD, PURE AND UNALLOYED…

IF WE SEEK GOLD, PURE AND UNALLOYED, WE MUST APPROACH THE INTERIOR ALTAR

Our golden altar is charity in the Heart of Jesus, whence rises to heaven the fragrant incense which embalms the earth… To meditate upon the exterior sufferings of Jesus is, no doubt, meritorious and holy; but if we seek for gold, pure and unalloyed, we must approach the interior altar, the very Heart of Jesus, and there study the untold riches of His love. Hence we must draw the conclusion that outward devotions, however praiseworthy in themselves, have no value except for the spirit which inspires them and the piety which animates them.

(St Anthony, in “St Anthony’s Treasury, 1916”)

PRAYER TO THE EUCHARISTIC HEART

PRAYER TO THE EUCHARISTIC HEART

O Eucharistic Heart, O Sovereign love of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hast instituted the august Sacrament in order to dwell here below in our midst, in order to give to our souls thy Flesh as food, and thy Blood as drink; we believe firmly, Lord Jesus, in that supreme Love which has caused thee to institute the Most Holy Eucharist.

Here before this Victim, it is just that we should adore this Love, that we should acknowledge and exalt it as the life-giving centre of thy Church. This Love urges us to approach thee. Thou seemest to say to us: “Behold how I love you! In giving you My Flesh to eat and My Blood to drink, I desire by this close relation to awaken your love and to unite you to Myself. I wish to effect the transformation of your souls into that of your crucified Saviour, Who is the Bread of eternal life. Give me then your hearts, have life by living in Me, and you will live in God.”

We recognise, O Lord, that such is the call of thine Eucharistic Heart. We thank thee, and we are ready – yes, we will respond to it. Grant us the grace that we may be fully penetrated with thy sovereign Love, by which, on the eve of thy Passion, thou didst invite us to partake and to eat of thy Sacred Body. Imprint deeply in our inmost souls the firm resolve to respond faithfully to this invitation. Grant us the devotion and reverence necessary to honour and receive worthily the gift of thine Eucharistic Heart, bestowed as a last mark of thy Love.

May we thus be enabled by thy grace to celebrate effectually the remembrance of thy Passion, to repair our offences and coldness, to nourish and increase our love for thee, and to keep for ever alive in our hearts the seed of a blessed immortality. Amen.

[Three hundred days Indulgence every time when recited before the Blessed Sacrament exposed. A Plenary Indulgence if recited once a day for an entire month, together with at least half an hour spent in adoration once a week before the Blessed Sacrament under the usual condition of Confession and Communion. These Indulgences are applicable to the souls in Purgatory. (Rescript June, 1902.)]

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

I, (name), give myself

to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and I consecrate to Him
my person and my life,
my actions, pains, and sufferings,
so that henceforth I shall be unwilling
to make use of any part of my being
except for the honour, love, and glory
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

My unchanging purpose is to be all His
and to do all things for the love of Him
while renouncing with all my heart
whatever is displeasing to Him.

I take You,
O Sacred Heart of Jesus,
as the only object of my love,
the guardian of my life,
the assurance of my salvation,
the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy,
the atonement for all my faults,
and the sure refuge at my death.

O Heart of goodness,
be my justification before God the Father,
and turn away from me
the strokes of His righteous anger.

O Heart of love,
I place all my trust in You,
for I fear everything
from my own wickedness and frailty,
but I hope for all things
from Your goodness and bounty.

Consume in me all that can displease You
or resist Your holy Will.
Let Your pure love imprint You
so deeply upon my heart
that I shall nevermore be able to forget You
or be separated from You.

May I obtain from all Your lovingkindness
the grace of having my name written in You,
for I desire to place in You
all my happiness and all my glory,
living and dying in virtual bondage to You.
Amen.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE SACRED HEART

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE SACRED HEART

(The Holy Father Pope Pius XI wanted the whole human race to be consecrated to Jesus – the universal King – on the last day of the year 1925, with this prayer. He then ordered that the last Sunday of October should be dedicated with solemnity and special ceremony by the whole Church to the eternal Lord of all time, and that this consecration should be said, which is the same as that of Leo XIII, with a few changes. – If not being said in a Church, the word ‘altar’ should be replaced with ‘presence’.)

Most sweet Jesus, redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before Your Altar. We are Yours, and Yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united to You, behold, each one of us this day freely dedicates himself to Your Most Sacred Heart. Many, indeed, have never known You, many, too, despising Your precepts have rejected You. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Your Sacred Heart.

Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken You, but also of the prodigal sons who have abandoned You, grant that they may quickly return to their Father’s house, before they perish of wretchedness and hunger. Be King of those whom heresy holds in error or discord keeps far away, call them back to the harbour of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one fold and one Shepherd.
Be King of all those who even now sit in the shadow of idolatry or Islam, and do not refuse to bring them into the light of Your kingdom. Look, finally, with eyes of pity upon the children of that race, which was for so long a time Your chosen people, and let Your blood, which was once invoked upon them in vengeance, now descend upon them also in a cleansing flood of redemption and eternal life.

Grant, O Lord, to Your Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm, unto all nations give an ordered tranquillity; bring it to pass that from pole to pole the earth may resound with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

JESUS REMAINS ALWAYS FAITHFUL

JESUS REMAINS ALWAYS FAITHFUL

THE FAITHFUL HEART OF JESUS

It is not with God as with men,” says the Holy Spirit. Men often break their word, either because they lie in making the promise, or because they change their mind after promising. But God cannot be unfaithful to His promises; for He cannot lie, and He is unchanging.

How faithful then, is the Heart of Jesus, and what confidence we should have in His promises! He is faithful to the poor sinner, who asks Him for grace and mercy, for He has said: “If any hear my voice, and open to me the door, I will enter into his house, and I will sup with him, and he with Me.”

He is faithful to those who pray to Him with confidence. “Ask,” He has said, “and you shall receive.” He is faithful to the soul exposed to temptations who addresses to Him its cry of distress, for, as the apostle assures us, “God is faithful and He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond your strength.” Oh, how much better it is to deal with God than with men.

We ought to have as certain a conviction that the Heart of Jesus cannot fail us, as we have reason to fear that men would betray us.

MINUTE MEDITATION: THE MERCIFUL HEART OF JESUS

MINUTE MEDITATION: THE MERCIFUL HEART OF JESUS

HE GIVES HIS LIFE TO SNATCH US, HIS CHOSEN SHEEP, FROM THE DEATH OF SIN AND OF HELL.

Tender and compassionate, immense and truly incomprehensible is the pity of the Heart of Jesus for our miseries.

It was pity which made Him descend from heaven to earth, to work so many prodigies of mercy and compassion on our behalf. Like a good shepherd, He gives His life to snatch us, His chosen sheep, from the death of sin and of hell. Lamb of God, He exposes Himself to the rigours of divine justice, that we may be spared. Mediator between God and man, He consents to be abandoned, that we may be received into the friendship of His Heavenly Father.

And all this mercy, all this compassion, is living still in the Heart of Jesus. How He grieves to see so many perishing, or exposing themselves to perishing eternally! “O men,” He cries to them, “my poor children, why do you perish thus? Rather return to Me and live.”

“Return to Me and live.”

And when at length, contrite and humbled we return to Jesus, oh! with what tender mercy and compassion He welcomes us, embraces us, and re-establishes us in our rights! And – prodigy truly incomprehensible! – He even forgets our iniquities, so that, banishing from His Heart all resentment and all idea of vengeance, He seems never to have suffered the smallest injury at our hands.

THE SAINTS FOUND THEIR REPOSE IN THE HEART OF JESUS

THE SAINTS FOUND THEIR REPOSE IN THE HEART OF JESUS

LET US DRAW NEAR TO JESUS CHRIST

Let us draw near to Jesus Christ; let us tremble and be ravished with joy at the thought of His Heart. Oh, how pleasant, how delightful, it is to dwell in this Heart!

I will adore, I will praise the name of the Lord in this temple, in this Holy of Holies, in this Ark of the Testament, saying with David: I have found a Heart to pray to my God, and this Heart is that of my King, of my most sweet Jesus.

Having found, then, O Jesus Christ, this Heart which is also mine, I will adore You, You, my God. Receive my prayers in this sanctuary of propitiation, nay more, draw me entirely into this Heart.

O Jesus Christ, a thousand times more beautiful than all the charms of the earth

O Jesus Christ, a thousand times more beautiful than all the charms of earth, wash me more and more from my iniquity; purify me from my sins, that I may approach You and gain the privilege of dwelling in Your Heart all my life; for Your Heart has been wounded thus to afford us a sure entrance.

Who, then, would not love this wounded Heart? Who would not return the affection of One Who loves him so much? Therefore, though still imprisoned in the bonds of the flesh, let us make Him what return we can; let us love, let us embrace this Divine Master, wounded for our sake, pierced in His Hands and Feet and Heart by impious executioners; let us keep near Him always, so that our hearts, still hard and impentinent, may be wounded by the arrows and bound by the chains of His love!

– St Bernard, from Laverty & Sons (eds), 1905
