SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING, BIBLE READING II (COLOSSIANS 1:12-20)

SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING, BIBLE READING II (COLOSSIANS 1:12-20)

He has created a place for us in the kingdom of the Son that he loves.

We give thanks to the Father who has made it possible for you to join the saints and with them to inherit the light. Because that is what he has done: he has taken us out of the power of darkness and created a place for us in the kingdom of the Son that he loves, and in him, we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins.

He is the image of the unseen God and the first-born of all creation, for in him were created all things in heaven and on earth: everything visible and everything invisible, Thrones, Dominations, Sovereignties, Powers – all things were created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed, and he holds all things in unity.

Now the Church is his body, he is its head. As he is the Beginning, he was first to be born from the dead, so that he should be first in every way; because God wanted all perfection to be found in him and all things to be reconciled through him and for him, everything in heaven and everything on earth, when he made peace by his death on the cross.

V. The word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

“BLESSED INDEED IS MARY” – THOUGHTS ON THE ASSUMPTION

“Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today’s Solemnity celebrates the truth that the Blessed Virgin Mary, when she had completed her life here on earth, was in body and soul assumed into heaven. This solemnity has been celebrated in the Church since the seventh century and this truth was defined as an article of faith in 1950.

St Bernard of Clairvaux wrote of today, ‘We in our exile have sent on ahead of us our advocate who, as mother of our Judge and mother of mercy, will humbly and effectively look after everything that concerns our salvation. Today earth has sent a priceless gift up to heaven, so that by giving and receiving within the blessed bond of friendship, the human is wedded to the divine, earth to heaven, the depths to the heights… Blessed indeed is Mary, blessed in many ways, both in receiving the Saviour, and in being received by the Saviour.’

A French mystic writer of the seventeenth century wrote, ‘There is nothing more wonderful than this life of Jesus and Mary; the holy life that he pours continuously into her, the divine life with which he animates her, loving and praising and adoring God his Father in her, giving a worthy supplement to her heart wherein he abounds with pleasure.’

We are reminded so often that Jesus loves it when people give honour to His Mother. Today we continue our prayers to Mary and honour her in the great privilege that has been afforded her today. We can make our own the opening prayer of today’s Mass:

‘Almighty ever-living God,

who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary,

the Mother of your Son,

body and soul into heavenly glory,

grant we pray,

that, always attentive to the things that are above,

we may merit to be sharers of her glory.'”

PRAYER ON THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD

O God, you so lovingly offered us eternal life through Mary’s maternal virginity; grant us to feel the power of her intercession, for it was through her we received the author of life, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS

To the all-holy God, let us pray through the intercession of all the saints:

R. Grant your blessing, O Lord!

Enrich the poor; comfort the sorrowing; feed the hungry; protect the persecuted:
– through the work of the holy ones inflamed with your divine love. (R)

Protect the defenceless day and night:
– through the service of those who devote their lives to the protection of their neighbours. (R)

Make holy the people who bear your name:
– through the prayer and example of all those who serve you with their whole heart. (R)

(Personal intentions)

Our Father…

May God enlighten the eyes of our mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for us, what rich glories he has promised the saints will inherit. Amen. (cf. Eph 1:18)
