ST GABRIEL OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS – HE BEGAN TO TIRE OF THE WORLD’S VANITY WHEN HE FELL ILL

ST GABRIEL OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS – CONFESSOR

Gabriel, born at Assisi in Umbria, and called Francis in memory of his seraphic fellow-citizen, showed outstanding qualities of soul. As a youth, although by the gift of God already mercifully invited to a more perfect life, he began to tire of the vanity of the world only when he fell ill.

Entering the Institute of the Clerics of the Passion, he chose the name Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin to keep constant the memory of her joys and sorrows.

He was completely crucified to the world

He honoured her with every kind of devotion, especially when, as was his custom, he so sorrowfully contemplated her thoroughly afflicted by the torments of Jesus, that he shed a flood of tears.

He kept the flower of chastity immaculate, practised the austerity of his congregation, was completely crucified to the world, and lived only for God.

Thus passing his short life in the exercise of every virtue, more truly consumed by the fire of love than the ravages of illness, and refreshed with the help of the Mother of God, he passed to heaven in the year 1862. Pope Pius X added him to the number of the blessed. Benedict XV to the number of saints, and Pius XI was pleased to extend his office and Mass to the Universal Church.

PRAYER TO ST GABRIEL OF THE SORROWING VIRGIN

O God, you taught blessed Gabriel to be ever mindful of the sorrows of your most gentle Mother and through her endowed him with the gifts of sanctity and miracles.

Grant that by virtue of his intercession and example, we may so share in the sorrows of your Mother that we may be saved by her maternal protection. You who live and reign with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
