ST LUKE, EVANGELIST

ST LUKE, EVANGELIST

ST LUKE, EVANGELIST – FEAST: OCTOBER 18

Luke was a physician of Antioch. He knew Greek and was a disciple of the Apostle Paul. Luke wrote the Gospel from holy tradition (word of mouth) and compiled the Acts from what he, personally, had seen. He never married and lived eighty-four years.

PRAYER:

Father,

you chose Luke the evangelist to reveal

by preaching and writing

the mystery of your love for the poor.

Unite in one heart and spirit

all who glory in your name,

and let all nations come to see your salvation.

Through our Lord…

FEAST OF ST LUKE, EVANGELIST; GOSPEL READING (LUKE 10:1-9)

FEAST OF ST LUKE, EVANGELIST; GOSPEL READING (LUKE 10:1-9)

THE HARVEST IS RICH BUT THE LABOURERS ARE FEW.

The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.

Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, ‘The kingdom of God is very near to you.’”

INTERCESSIONS ON THE FEAST OF ST LUKE, EVANGELIST

INTERCESSIONS ON THE FEAST DAY OF ST LUKE, EVANGELIST; OCTOBER 19th:

To Jesus Christ, the divine physician, let us pray:

R. Heal your people, Lord!

Open the ears of those who are deaf to your word,
– that they may hear and believe the good news of salvation. (R.)

Bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted,
– that they may rejoice in your love. (R.)

Inspire compassion in the nations of the world,
– that they may open their borders and their resources to those exiled by war, famine, persecution and disease. (R.)

(Personal intentions)

– Our Father, who art in heaven, etc.

God of mercy and compassion, you hold out to us the hand of Your mercy to raise us up from the misery our selfish sinfulness has brought upon us and upon those whose lives we touch. Teach us to weep where we have caused weeping, to mourn where we have caused mourning, and to lift up what we have brought low. In hope and trust, we turn to you for healing, through Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
