THE SPACIOUS FIRMAMENT ON HIGH (HARVEST HYMN)

The spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim.
The unwearied sun from day to day
Does his Creator’s power display,
And publishes to every land
The works of an almighty hand.

Soon as the evening shades prevail
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly to the listening earth
Repeats the story of her birth;
Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings, as they roll,
And spread the truth from pole to pole.

What though in solemn silence all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball;
What though nor real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found;
In reason’s ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice;
For ever singing as they shine,
‘The hand that made us is Divine.’
– J. Addison, 1672-1719

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (JOB 9:1-12, 14-16)

(Week 26 of the year: Wednesday)

HOW CAN MAN BE IN THE RIGHT AGAINST GOD?

And Job answered, and said:

Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.

If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace?

Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.

Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

Who commandeth the sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:

Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.

Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.

Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.

If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.

If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?

What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?

I, Who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication my judge.

And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

YOU ORDERED, LORD, THE SUN TO LIGHT (HYMN)

You ordered, Lord, the sun to light
On this fourth day his heavenly phase;
You set the moon her circuit bright,
The stars their ever-winding maze.

Disperse the darkness of our hearts,
Erase the baseness of our minds;
Unloose the fetters of our sin,
O’erthrow the load of guilt which binds.

Our prayer, most loving Father, hear
Through Jesus Christ your only Son,
Who with the Holy Paraclete,
Now reigns while endless ages run.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (GENESIS 15:1-12, 17-18)

ABRAHAM PUT HIS FAITH IN GOD, AND THIS FAITH WAS CONSIDERED AS JUSTIFYING HIM. THE LORD MADE A COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM.

It happened that the word of the Lord was spoken to Abram in a vision, “Have no fear, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great.”

“My Lord,” Abram replied “what do you intend to give me? I go childless…” Then Abram said, “See, you have given me no descendants; some man of my household will be my heir.” And then this word of the Lord was spoken to him, “He shall not be your heir; your heir shall be of your own flesh and blood.” Then taking him outside he said, “Look up to heaven and count the stars if you can. Such will be your descendants” he told him. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who counted this as making him justified.

“I am the Lord” he said to him “who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldaeans to make you heir to this land.” “My Lord,” Abram replied “how am I to know that I shall inherit it?” He said to him, “Get me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove and a young pigeon.” He brought him all these, cut them in half and put half on one side and half facing it on the other; but the birds he did not cut in half. Birds of prey came down on the carcasses but Abram drove them off.

Now as the sun was setting Abram fell into a deep sleep, and terror seized him. When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, there appeared a smoking furnace and a firebrand that went between the halves. This day the Lord made a Covenant with Abram in these terms:

“To your descendants I give this land,
from the wadi of Egypt to the Great River,
the river Euphrates.”

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
