BEFORE THE EARTH CAME INTO BEING, WISDOM WAS BORN (PROV 8:22-31)

BEFORE THE EARTH CAME INTO BEING, WISDOM WAS BORN (PROV 8:22-31)

The Most Holy Trinity (Year C) – First Reading

The Wisdom of God cries aloud:

The Lord created me when his purpose first unfolded,

before the oldest of his works.

From everlasting I was firmly set,

from the beginning, before earth came into being.

The deep was not, when I was born,

there were no Springs to gush with water.

Before the mountains were settled,

before the hills, I came to birth;

before he made the earth, the countryside,

or the first grains of the world’s dust.

When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there,

when he drew ring on the surface of the deep,

when he thickened the cloud above,

when he fixed fast the springs of the deep,

when he assigned the sea its boundaries

– and the waters will not invade the shore –

when he laid down the foundations of the earth,

I was by his side, a master craftsman,

delighting in him day after day,

ever at play in his presence,

at play everywhere in the world,

delighting to be with the sons of men.

The word of the Lord.

ALL WISDOM IS FROM THE LORD (ECCLESIASTICUS 1-10)

All wisdom is from God, and is given to them that fear and love God.

All wisdom is from the Lord God, and hath been always with him, and is before all time.

Who hath numbered the sand of the sea, and the drops of rain, and the days of the world? Who hath measured the height of heaven, and the breadth of the earth, and the depth of the abyss?

Who hath searched out the wisdom of God that forth before all things?

Wisdom hath been created before all things, and the understanding of prudence from everlasting.

The word of God on high is the foundation of wisdom, and her ways are everlasting commandments.

To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed, and who hath known her wise counsels?

To whom hath the discipline of wisdom been revealed and made manifest? and who hath understood the multiplicity of her steps?

There is one most high Creator Almighty, and a powerful king, and greatly to be feared, who sitteth upon his throne, and is the God of dominion.

He created her in the Holy Ghost, and saw her, and numbered her, and measured her.

And he poured her out upon all his works, and upon all flesh according to his gift, and he hath given her to them that love him.

BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT THE SORT OF LIVES YOU LEAD… (Eph 5:15)

Be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intelligent and not like senseless people (Eph 5:15)

Intercessions

To Christ, the Lord of life, we pray:

R. Christ our life, hear our prayer.

For those who seek life by following laws not made by you:

– show them your truth, that they may know you and live. (R.)

For those who feed on false wisdom:

– show them your truth, that they may know you and live. (R.)

For those who long for eternal life:

– show them your truth, that they may know you and live. (R.)

Our Father…

May the country be filled with the knowledge of glory of the Lord as the waters swell the sea. Amen. (cf. Hab 2:14)

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (JOB 38:1, 12-21, 33-35)

(Week 26 of the year: Friday)

HAVE YOU GIVEN ORDERS TO THE MORNING, OR JOURNEYED ALL THE WAY TO THE SOURCES OF THE SEA?

Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said:

Didst thou since birth command the morning, and shew the dawning of the day its place?

And didst thou hold the extremities of the earth shaking them, and hast thou shaken the ungodly out of it?

The seal shall be restored as clay, and shall stand as a garment:

From the wicked their light shall be taken away, and the high arm shall be broken.

Hast thou entered into the depths of the sea, and walked in the lowest parts of the deep?

Have the gates of death been opened to thee, and hast thou seen the darksome doors?

Hast thou considered the breadth of the earth? tell me, if thou knowest all things?

Where is the way where light dwelleth, and where is the place of darkness:

That thou mayst bring every thing to its own bounds, and understand the paths of the house thereof.

Didst thou know then that thou shouldst be born? and didst thou know the number of thy days?

Then Job answered the Lord, and said:

What can I answer, who hath spoken inconsiderately? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.

One thing I have spoken, which I wish I had not said: and another, to which I will add no more.

“GIVE US THE STRENGTH TO MODEL OUR LIVES ON THE PATTERN SET BY YOU”

Let us pray. Grant us always, O Lord, the Spirit to discern what is good and to carry it into effect; and since we cannot exist without you, give us the strength to model our lives on the pattern set by you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING I (1 KINGS 3:5, 7-12)

YOU HAVE ASKED FOR A DISCERNING JUDGEMENT FOR YOURSELF.

The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, “Ask what you would like me to give you.” Solomon replied, “Lord, my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership. Your servant finds himself in the midst of this people of yours that you have chosen, a people so many its numbers cannot be counted or reckoned. Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil, for who could govern this people of yours that is so great?”

It pleased the Lord that Solomon should have asked for this. “Since you have asked for this” the Lord said “and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies, but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself, here and now I do what you ask. I give you a heart wise and shrewd as none before you has had and none will have after you.”

TODAY’S BIBLE READING I (WISDOM 12:13, 16-19)

AFTER SIN YOU WILL GRANT REPENTANCE.

There is no god, other than you, who cares for everything,
to whom you might have to prove that you never judged unjustly.
Your justice has its source in strength,
your sovereignty over all makes you lenient to all.
You show your strength when your sovereign power is questioned
and you expose the insolence of those who know it;
but, disposing of such strength, you are mild in judgement,
you govern us with great lenience,
for you have only to will, and your power is there.
By acting thus you have taught a lesson to your people
how the virtuous man must be kindly to his fellow men,
and you have given your sons the good hope
that after sin you will grant repentance.

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
