GOING TO CONFESSION

To help those of you who have not been to confession for a long time, or those of you who do not have English as your first language, here is a form of words to use when going to confession.

PRIEST AND PARISHIONER: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PARISHIONER: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. My last confession was (?time) ago and these are my sins…. For these and all the sins I cannot now remember I am truly sorry.

The PRIEST will now say a few words of encouragement to help you in the Christian life. The PRIEST will also give you a simple PENANCE for you to do afterwards, which may be one of our well known prayers.

The PRIEST will say the words of ABSOLUTION and you will be invited to say your Act of Contrition (prayer of sorrow) as follows:

PARISHIONER: O my God, because You are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against You, and by the help of Your grace I will not sin again.

The PRIEST will say a few words to end the ceremony and then you respond:

PARISHIONER: Thank you, Father.

The PARISHIONER leaves and does the PENANCE.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD (HYMN)

Light of the world, before thee
our spirits prostrate fall;
we worship, we adore thee,
thou Light, the life of all,
with thee is no forgetting
of all thine hand hath made;
thy rising hath no setting,
thy sunshine hath no shade.

Light of the world, illumine
this darkened earth of thine,
till everything that’s human
be filled with what’s divine;
till every tongue and nation,
from sin’s dominion free,
rise in the new creation
which springs from love and thee.
– John S. B. Monsell

O MY SOUL, BLESS GOD THE FATHER (HYMN)

O my soul, bless God the Father;
all within me bless his name:
bless the Father, and forget not
all his mercies to proclaim,
who forgiveth thy transgressions,
thy diseases all who heals;
who redeems thee from destruction,
who with thee so kindly deals.

Far as east from west is distant,
he hath put away our sin;
like the pity of a father
hath the Lord’s compassion been.
As it was without beginning,
so it lasts without an end;
to their children’s children ever
shall his righteousness extend.
– Hymns Ancient and Modern, 1861

BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD (HYMN)

Breathe on me, breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
till I am wholly thine,
till all this earthly part of me
glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God
so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect life
of thine eternity.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION TO THE TRINITY

O God, I vow and consecrate to You all that is in me: my memory and my actions to God the Father; my understanding and my words to God the Son; my will and my thoughts to God the Holy Spirit; my heart and my body, my tongue, my senses, and all my sorrows to the sacred humanity of Jesus Christ, Who was content to be betrayed into the hands of wicked men and to suffer the torment of the Cross.
– St Francis de Sales

“THE DESIRES FOR HEAVEN ARE LIKE WINGS ON WHICH THE SOUL CAN ASCEND TO PARADISE”

UNITY WITH JESUS ON THIS EARTHLY PILGRIMAGE AND AFTERWARDS IN PARADISE

“Glorious Heart of Jesus, how I yearn for unity with you and in paradise for evermore.”

In order to be united with the Heart of Jesus, you must ardently desire paradise. Up there, there is the Heart of your loving Father, your sweet spouse, your heavenly friend and your divine brother. It is the height to which your heart must aim.

In this life, you cannot see His sovereign beauty, you cannot contemplate His sweet smile, you are always tormented by a great need for love which you can never quite satisfy, but in heaven you will clearly see Him, you will perfectly love Him, you will eternally possess Him without fear of losing Him! There, your heart eternally loved by the Heart of Jesus, will love Him forever with a love that is always new, always fulfilling, a fire of love, in other words heaven! There, through the Heart of Jesus, you will be united with all the angels and the saints, with Mary and the Holy Trinity so that their light, their joy and their glory will be yours, which must mean heaven!

You should at every moment say with St Paul, “I want to be free of my chains and be with Jesus Christ.” You should say with St Therese, “I am dying because I am not dead.” O, how many souls are in the fires of hell because they never desired paradise! O, how many souls are in the fires of purgatory because they did not desire paradise quite enough! The desires for heaven are like wings on which the soul can ascend to paradise.
– Mons Nicola Tafuri
