BEWARE OF NOISY AND DESTRUCTIVE TENANTS!

The mind and the heart are like a house in which lodgers are received.They may be honest and quiet, or, on the other hand, noisy and destructive, doing much injury to the dwelling which shelters them.

Let us beware, then, of the ideas which we receive beneath our roof; let us not collect them at random from every book or magazine [or T.V., internet, commercials, music videos, etc.] which comes across out path. There are ideas which, when received as lodgers, can only be got rid of with great difficulty.

JESUS SAID TO THEM: “WHY ARE YE FEARFUL, YE MEN OF LITTLE FAITH?”

The Tempest

“Jesus had entered into a boat, with his disciples. And behold a storm began to upheave the sea, and the bark, invaded by the waves, seemed on the point of being engulfed. But He slept. ‘Lord,’ cried out the terrified disciples, ‘Lord save us, we perish!’ Jesus said to them: ‘Why are ye fearful, ye men of little faith?’ Then, rising, He commanded the winds and the sea, and immediately there was a great calm.

Lord, save us, we perish!

Alas! that bark, those heaving waves, those raging winds, are they not an image of man here below?

A vivid description of our lives here below

As a bark launched on the waves encounters are thousand perils, and struggles with the storm, so man, on the stormy sea of this life is exposed to all kinds of perils and dangers: temptations, scandals, bad advice, dangerous occasions, human respect [the fear of what people might think or say about oneself]: then there are our passions, like furious winds, tossing our bark, and threatening to upset it, in order to engulf it in the waves of sin.

I have lifted up my eyes towards the holy mountains, from thence comes my help

What are we to do, in the midst of a storm, and amidst all those dangers? – “I have lifted up my eyes towards the holy mountains,’ said David ‘it is thence that help will come to me.’ Just as the pilot keeps his eyes fixed on the star which will guide him to the port, so must we always look to Jesus, and address to Him always our cry of distress, and of confidence: ‘Lord, save us, we perish!’

Lord, save me!

No, Lord, I do not rely on myself; for You have said: ‘Cursed is the man who puts his trust in man.’ Let me then always say to You: ‘Lord, save me!’

TODAY’S BIBLE READING (1 CORINTHIANS 7:25-31)

(Week 23 of the year: Wednesday)

IF YOU ARE TIED TO A WIFE, DO NOT LOOK FOR FREEDOM; IF YOU ARE FREE OF A WIFE, THEN DO NOT LOOK FOR ONE.

Now concerning virgins, I have no commandment of the Lord; but I give counsel, as having obtained mercy of the Lord, to be faithful.

I think therefore that this is good for the present necessity, that it is good for a man so to be.

Art thou bound to a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.

But if thou take a wife, thou hast not sinned. And if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned: nevertheless, such shall have tribulation of the flesh. But I spare you.

This therefore I say, brethren; the time is short; it remaineth, that they also who have wives, be as if they had none;

And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as if they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not;

And they that use this world, as if they used it not: for the fashion of this world passeth away.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING II (ROMANS 8:35, 37-39)

NO CREATED THING CAN EVER COME BETWEEN US AND THE LOVE OF GOD MADE VISIBLE IN CHRIST.

Nothing can come between us and the love of Christ, even if we are troubled or worried, or being persecuted, or lacking food or clothes, or being threatened or even attacked. These are the trials through which we triumph, by the power of him who loved us.

For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, no angel, no prince, nothing that exists, nothing still to come, not any power, or height or depth, nor any created thing, can ever come between us and the love of God made visible in Christ Jesus our Lord.

V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA

Alleluia, alleluia!
Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Alleluia!

PRAYER TO ST AUGUSTINE ZHAO RONG AND COMPANIONS

O righteous band of martyrs united by faith in Christ and His Church in a nation of religious oppression: children and grandparents, workers and teachers, lay and ordained, native and foreign-born, all as one as you gave your lives, led by your convictions.

Pray the Word of the Lord comes to a land so cold to conversion, to the love and worship of Jesus, all men’s Saviour. Pray the Holy Spirit fall like purging and redeeming fire upon every soul in the country where you so honourably died; pray His power spreads and bring renewal upon the face of all the earth. Amen.

PRAYER TO ST JOHN PAUL II

O St John Paul, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing! Bless the Church that you loved and served and guided, courageously leading it along the paths of the world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who were your great passion. Help them dream again, help them look up high again to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth.

May you bless families, bless each family! You warned of Satan’s assault against this precious and indispensable divine spark that God lit on earth. St John Paul, with your prayer, may you protect the family and every life that blossoms from the family.

Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice. You tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that we may be tireless sowers of peace. O St John Paul, from heaven’s window, where we see you next to Mary, send God’s blessing down upon us all. Amen.

“FOR THE SOUL TO WHOM GOD IS EVERYTHING, THE WORLD IS NOTHING”

“For the soul to whom God is everything, the world is nothing.

Such a soul asks nothing more. It lives in God, and God in it. It exists in Him as in its element; it knows no other will, no other desires, no other glory, save the will, the desires, and the glory of God.

And in fact, what can such a soul ambition in heaven or on earth, since it possesses that amiable God, Who is at the same time all grandeur, all beauty, all wisdom, all power, all felicity, Who is the boundless sea of infinite goodness, whence all good things flow, and to which they return, like so many rivers.

What need has it of creatures, since it carries within itself Him, Who has made all creatures. No, to the soul which God has illuminated with His divine light, the world is nothing, attachment to creatures is nothing – God is everything.

9th MARCH, GOSPEL READING (MATTHEW 4:1-11)

THE TESTING OF JESUS (TEMPTATIONS)

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert that he might be put to the test by the devil. After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry.

[THE FLESH]

Then the devil came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, order these stones to turn into bread.” But Jesus answered, “Scripture says: ‘One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’.”

[THE WORLD]

Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain, and showed him all the nations of the world in all their greatness and splendour. And he said, “All this will I give you, if you kneel down and worship me.” Then Jesus answered, “Be off, Satan! Scripture says: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him alone’!”

Then the devil left him, and angels came to serve him.

V. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

BEFORE THY THRONE, O GOD, WE KNEEL (HYMN)

Before thy throne, O God, we kneel:
Give us a conscience quick to feel,
A ready mind to understnd
The meaning of thy chast’ning hand;
What e’er the pain and shame may be;
Bring us, O Father, nearer thee.

Search out our hearts and make us true;
Help us to give to all their due.
From love of pleasure, lust of gold,
From sins which make the heart grow cold,
Wean us and train us with thy rod.
Teach us to know our faults, O God.

For sins of heedless word and deed,
For pride ambitions to succeed,
For crafty trade and subtle snare
To catch the simple unaware,
For lives bereft of purpose high,
Forgive, forgive, O Lord, we cry.
– William Boyd Carpenter, alt.

“GIVE ME HELP TO RESIST THE DEVIL, THE FLESH AND THE WORLD”

GIVE ME HELP TO RESIST THE DEVIL, THE FLESH AND THE WORLD:

O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendour and Figure of His Substance, remember the simple and humble recommendation thou didst make of thy Soul to thy Eternal Father, saying, “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit”; and when thy Body, all torn, and thy Heart broken, and the bowels of thy Mercy open to redeem us thou didst expire.

By this precious Death, I beg thee, O King of Saints, comfort me and give me help to resist the devil, the flesh and the world, so that, being dead to the world, I may live for thee alone. I beg of thee at the hour of my death to receive me, a pilgrim and an exile returning to thee.
– St Bridget, 14th century
