PSALM 48 – AUDITE HÆC, OMNES GENTES

PSALM 48 – AUDITE HÆC, OMNES GENTES

The folly of worldlings, who live on in sin, without thinking of death and hell.

Unto the end, a psalm for the sons of Core.

Hear these things, all ye nations: give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world.

All you that are earthborn: both rich and poor together.

My mouth shall speak wisdom: and the meditation of my heart understanding.

I will incline my ear to a parable; I will open my proposition on the psaltery.

Why shall I fear in the evil day? the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me.

They that trust in their own strength, and glory in the multitude of their riches,

No brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: he shall not give to God his ransom,

Nor the price of the redemption of his soul: and shall labour for ever, and shall still live unto the end.

He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: the senseless and the fool shall perish together:

And they shall leave their riches to strangers: and their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever.

Their dwelling places to all generations: they have called their lands by their names.

And man when he was in honour did not understand; he is compared to senseless beasts, and is become like to them.

This way of theirs is a stumbling-block to them: and afterwards they shall delight in their mouth.

They are laid in hell like sheep: death shall feed upon them.

And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their help shall decay in hell from their glory.

But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, when he shall receive me.

Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, and when the glory of his house shall be increased.

For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; nor shall his glory descend with him.

For in his lifetime his soul will be blessed: and he will praise thee when thou shalt do well to him.

He shall go in to the generations of his fathers: and he shall never see light.

Man when he was in honour did not understand: he hath been compared to senseless beasts, and made like to them.

APPROVAL BY MEN – THAT FATAL POISON THAT CAN CORRUPT OUR BEST ACTIONS

ON BEING A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST BORN IN A STABLE

“Learn from Jesus to humiliate yourself in the sight of the world. He practised this humility by being born in a stable, by appearing to be the son of a carpenter and working for years in a humble village.

He practised humility when the crowds wanted to make Him King and He fled, when He told those He healed to say nothing to anyone, when He entered into festive Jerusalem on a donkey and when He washed the feet of His disciples in the Cenacle.

He put it particularly into practice during His passion, letting Himself be tied up, lashed, mocked and made fun of as a King, and finally by letting Himself be crucified as a malefactor.

Look to the Sacred Heart of Jesus therefore, and be always modest, fleeing any honour, avoiding any vanity, never seeking the approval of men, that fatal poison that can infect and corrupt your best actions.

The saints have always hidden their qualities, would you like to show off qualities you do not have? You will never find Jesus in the things the world applauds or considers important, take the last place and there you will find Him. A little humility is worth more than all the greatness and glory in the universe, and a single humiliation is worth more to His Heart than many prayers and the most splendid initiatives.”

“MY BRETHREN, I CONJURE YOU, APPLY YOURSELVES TO YOUR BUSINESS, TO THE GREAT BUSINESS OF SALVATION!”

“Yes, God desires the salvation of all. He does not wish anyone to be lost. But, as a matter of fact, He saves only those who, wishing to be saved, labour seriously for that end. Hence Saint Paul [Apostle] addresses this prayer to all Christians: ‘My brethren, I conjure you, apply yourselves to your business, to the great business of salvation!’

‘How foolish,’ says Saint Philip Neri, ‘is he who does not strive to save his soul!’ If there were two classes of men in the world, one destined to immortality, the other created solely for the fleeting existence of the present life; and if the first, always occupied with earthly things, thought only of gaining honours, riches and pleasures, – in what terms, thinks you, would the second address them? ‘Insensate creatures!’ they would cry. ‘What! you can win for yourselves infinite and eternal treasures, and you prefer to enjoy for a short time the miserable goods of earth! Ah! leave these poor enjoyments to us, who have no prospect of eternal salvations!’ And certainly they would be right. Have they then less reason, seeing that God excepts no one, creating us all for heaven and eternal salvation?”

“FLY FROM THE WORLD” – TEACHINGS OF BLESSED THEODORA TO THE NUNS

(This advice is of great importance, not just for nuns.)

“Dear mothers and sisters, fly from the world as one would fly from a serpent, because when the serpent bites, it is difficult to be cured: the same happens regarding the world.

Therefore, if you want to become true daughters of God, fly from the world and from the men of the world, guarding your souls in hesychia. Tell me, dear mothers and sisters, from where did the holy fathers gain the virtues, in the midst of the people and their world, or in the silence of the deserts?

If you will not abandon the foulness of the world, if you will not renounce the things of the flesh, if you will not practise hesychia, how will your soul be able to live in the divine future? Do you intend to enter into the Kingdom of God in which, until now, no other person has been able to enter?

My daughters, abandon your vain hopes and direct your gaze towards our Lord Jesus Christ, our Sun of truth, in Whom, in reality, is all our hope!

A soldier upon the earth, if he will not fight, if he will not pour out his blood nor bear wounds, will never receive glory, even that which is temporal! Do you want to save your souls and inherit eternal life without a struggle, eating well, drinking well, amusing yourselves with those of the world and going around amongst the people?

O foolish hope! My sisters, do not continue to make this mistake! Rid yourself of every care and worry, and do not even do needlework for the purpose of receiving alms. Leave that to the world! God does not want that we, who have chosen the monastic life, after having renounced the world, have also gold and superfluous things. The Lord has left us a clear commandment:

‘Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow nor reap nor store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.”

“LORD, FORGIVE THE FAILURES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIVE THAT LIVES SO WORLDLY”

“LORD, FORGIVE THE FAILURES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE THAT LIVES SO WORLDLY”

In these dark days when negation has so deeply entered into thought,
and the futility of life oppresses many souls,
when belief and unbelief appear indifferent
and what is left
is natural passion to express the pride of life,
or the empty void of nothingness
when the nerve to live and to create is weakened and suicides increase –
O Lord, forgive the failures of your Church to witness to the world
that justice should run down as water
and righteousness a mighty stream,
O Lord, forgive the failure of the Christian life
that lives so worldly
that few can see the life of Spirit
that must proclaim the kingdom of God’s love
to glorify his Name. Amen.
– Fr Gilbert Shaw
